High school students should be drug tested

A national drug summit in Adelaide has been told of a radical proposal to address addiction before it takes hold in teenagers.

 

Perth doctor George O'Neil suggests that high schools should test students for marijuana use as part of an annual health check and if they fail, they would be forced to undergo monthly tests.

 

Dr O'Neil says several mining companies use a similar model on their employees.

 

"The only punishment a school could ever give is to change from annual monitoring to monthly monitoring on the kids that were starting to be affected," Dr O'Neil said.

 

"But if you're being monitored once a month and you have to discuss this with your mum once a month, that's the best way to deal with the problem in the community."

 

Meanwhile, a former magistrate has told the summit that patients with drug-induced psychosis are clogging the mental health system.

 

New figures from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Council show people who use methamphetamine are 11 times more likely to suffer a psychotic episode than those who do not use the drug.

 

Former New South Wales magistrate Craig Thompson says authorities should be able to order drug-affected patients into rehabilitation to make them kick the habit.

 

"Mental hospitals are not rehabilitation centres," Mr Thompson said.

 

"It's now accepted that cannabis is a very addictive drug and unless it's resolved, then you can give them their anti-psychotic medication and they're straight back on the cannabis and then back in again.

 

"So I see that some form of treatment program that they can channel into is very necessary."

i agree that students should be drug tested, but thats only because their minds are so fragile and smoking up as much as most of us do on here would turn their minds into swiss cheese in no time

 

on the other hand though, if the only punishment is to get tested monthly and get told "deary me, you failed the test again, go and have a talk with mummy when you get home" i would seriously laugh it off and not even bother, or reply with my mum used to smoke and grow the shit, my dad did the same, im only smoking the stuff, therefor, not a criminal, especially since it was decriminalised

 

would be kinda funny if they actually gave your thc readings out after you got tested, i can see it now, all the pot heads in the schools having a massive competition, everyone puts in $5-10 and the person who gets the highest percentage of thc in their blood wins an ounce

They got it all wrong, cannabis is a natural herb and because companies are losing money on their "addictive medication" that does nothing but give a temp fix to one solution and creates a whole lot of other problems... ah stupid system

Do you really think testing kids will stop them using?

It will only create more hype around drugs and make them more attractive to h/s kids

as WDC said they will compete to get the highest drug count

When i was kid i beleived all the lies i was told about weed, that it was a drug that would turn ya into lunatic/mass-murderer etc (reefer madness)

Then one day i had a smoke...and realised everything i had been told was bullshit

Hey I agreed about developing minds not getting baked, I didn't say anything about testing. People shouldn't be forced to take any test (test the music and art teachers)

 

Some people are going to smoke at early ages no matter what, which is ok, we need to balance out the IQ figures somehow

but seriously ... yes i accept that it could create 'content rivalry' ... it would have to come with some teeth that test .. like in pro sport maybe ... mind you i wouldn't advocate banning kids from school for a year or two :: that'd work! Ah shit ... i have no answer ... having typed up a couple of different thought paths ... then deleted them

 

I don't support prohibition .. especially of cannabis but i would like to see teenagers prevented from smoking ... am i mad? Muhaha yep! I wouldn't have let anyone tell me to stop smoking .. from 17 on ... or any of the other illegal substances I sampled and enjoyed .. so I guess its futile to try n stop the tide

 

but i think i may have been ok with it .. as a teenager if i was tested for substances ... the used to test me for alcohol at school and at home ... it only took the form of a subjective sobriety assessment by prefects,teachers or parents .... you know ... have a good smell of the breath and clothes ... too minty has always been suss and never really hides booze ... or cigs especially

 

if at the time i had had to do a monthly piss test ...it probably would have made sure i never indulged in any substances ... maybe i'm weird but at that age i didn't want trouble with any authorities .. i took drugs yes, but i was never gonna get caught .. right? just like i wouldn't hear a word about smoking dope being harmful to your brain .. my father used to give me articles he sourced from doctor mates .. research n stuff, and i thanked him, looked worried and went straight upstairs to have a spliff :smoke ... are you able to make that kind of an assessment as a teenager?

 

however, if it were normal for me to be regularly tested or randomly even, it probably would have worked .. in my case (I just wanted to be a good boy... whilever anyone was watching )
