New grower needs some help on lighting

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I have just discoverd the greatness of growing you own I have a spare medium size bedroom and I am thinking of puchasing a 423Watt HPS Ballast with a 423W Phillips Son T Agro Agriculture grow lamp with an adjustashade reflector and lampholder (Small – not mini, not large). The Son T Agro HPS 400w has 55000 lumens so I would guess the 423 has a bit more. Was also thinking of making a big box to go around them and foiling that. I wonder could anbody tell me if that is enough light. How many could I grow under those type of lighting conditions. Or does anyone have a better idea? Im open to opinion.

Any reply would be appreciated..

That light is way too small for a full room, is would be more at home in a wardrobe, a full room would require multiple 600w or 1000w lights. The optimum amount of light is 50w per square foot, to calculate your wattage requirements multiply square feet of grow space (L x W) by 50w eg: 8 sq ft x 50w = 400w. You will also need to consider your ventilation needs too.

The Son-T-Agro is a 430w globe that runs off a standard 400w HPS ballast, it does not come in either 400w or 423w.

Hi Nat

what medium are you growing in .. ? are you going to fill your room or just grow a few? I am using a spare room also but the growspace is only 2 square meters - enclosed with panda film - I use 2 400 SonT lights - one over each square meter. So I'd say it depends on how full you're gonna make your room :P

Thanks everyone for your reply..

I would like to grow maybe 10 at a time in soil and maybe some other type of growing medium. Coconut Coir maybe. I found a good deal on a 1000watt light. What u think? where can I buy panda film? I suppose that would be better than foil.

power....mate :P if you click on search at the top of this page and do a search on indoor setups research the topics, likewise go to forum indoor growing. you will learn 80% of what you want to know, then come back and ask the 20% you don't know.

if you don't even know where to buy panda film then your not going to understand what we are on about.

We are more than ready to help ya, but please get an understanding of the basics first...ok?

I do not not mean this in a smart-arse way :P

You can grow a hundred small plants under a 400w, or one big one. It's how much space that lamp will fit over that is the main point. :P

Have a bit of a cruise through the grow diaries, and the forums in general, and you should get a bit of a better idea about what is involved, and how much light is required for how much space. Think about how much yeild you want to get. A 600w with a good strain can yeild about a pound per 3 month cycle, give or take a couple of weeks.

Hope that helps, and welcome to the family of growers. :P

I am searching but every ones growing room etc is individual eg is different size etc.. I am new at full on growing with artificial light. I appreciate all you efforts at replying to my posts and I take each one with the utmost consideration..
