Changing bulbs every grow or 6mths is extreme and I,ll bet you your yieds dont change ! I know a guy whos bulbs are 3 yrs old and his still pulling what he has done since they were new , between all the things that can effect your grow changing bulbs every few mths is waisting money , if your worried about your lights output move them a few inchs closer , its all relative so if your believe they are putting out less light then they are cooler so move them in .

Every light has a set bulb life in hours. Off the cuff a 400w HPS has a life of 3,000 hrs. Roadblock, I bet if ya mate changes his bulb after 3 yrs his yield would be up 30% or more and the plants happyer & a hell of alot healthyer. :smoke

Yeh , I agree 3yrs is a bit long for me also but no more extreme than every 6 mths or every grow , his lamps are a lot closer to the plants now I noticed that right off , like I said his yield last mth is the same as it was when the lamps were new ! he keeps meticulass records and is not just blowing off , thats why he is such a cheap skate , he wont buy nothing unless it proves to be needed , when he does change bulbs he doesnt buy all new bulbs he buys only 2 at a time to keep the over all spectrum within acceptable limits and his plants are very happy believe me , with new bulbs you say he will get 30% yeild increase , I dont think so , he gets from 8 x 400s x 12plants - 2wks grow - 8wk flower = between 6 and 7 pd of White Rhino , like clockwork !

 

Plants have three factors going on concerning light , one is intensity the another is light hrs the third surface area , for instance all things being equal , 3 x 400 on for 16 hrs will produce growth rates the same as 1 x 1000 on for 20hrs , what this points to is that the manufactures rated light hrs of a plant growing bulb is a very inaccurate guide to its lifespan X growth rate , do you think the Sun is wearing out in winter and needs replacement . no its just that its closer in Summer .

 

Everthing to do with plants is varible , every element concerning growth has controlling factors that on a scale rise up then level out for quite awhile and then go back down again , its the far end of that scale we want to avoid .
