Just to let people know, I am trying to organise some sort of action in Adelaide on September 10th. Current idea is to make some huge posters and hang them around town, etc. Perhaps a rally or meeting on steps of Parliament House if we get enough people. More info/ideas please email me. We can make this big!

If you've got time or for future events, have you tried to garner support from other orgs? Student bodies, unions, patient groups (AIDS Council, Cancer Council, MS Society etc.). Other activist groups - socialists, greens etc. Write to every politician asking for support (speakers on the day?) - even the ones you dislike. Join as many forums as you can to promote your event - you will find many Australians use international internet forums and many of these forums have specfic regional topic areas.

You will of course need you need posters & pamphlets to promote the event as well as imformation (slogans) pamphlets on the day. Signs and other props for the protest day need to be large and easy to read from a distance or a passing car, A1 minimium size but preferably A0. Bullhorn or other amplified way of speaking to masses. Photocopy places such as 'Kinkos' can do outsized copies relatively cheap on the 'plotter', the machine they use to copy blueprints etc. Milk crate (or other type device) to stand on to be seen by your crowd.

When promoting your event don't rely on people (shopkeepers etc.) to put your posters up, take your own staple gun, thumb tacks and/or blu-tack. Like-wise don't just put pamphlets out around the place, hand them out - people take more notice of something put directly in their hands. Better still talk and inform as you hand out pamphlets (wit is generally better than anger when conversing with members of the public).

IMPORTANT: Plan for the weather - clear plastic ponchos (from a $2 shop) for yourself and friends can save on major discomfort, maybe an umbrella or two, waterproof signage (relatively easy to cover signs with clear plastic). Hat and sunscreen (just in case it doesn't rain but is bakingly hot instead), insect repelant.

Don't be to disheartened if you fail to garner much support - never underestimate the power of the lone protest. It's worked for me in the past (and hopefully the future).

Prepare a 'media release' to send out to all (ALL) media outlets you can think of, - mainstream as well as more obscure publications, include print (newspapers & mags), radio(include community radio), TV.

Prepare 'sound bites' for the media, check the news out and just see how little time is devoted to the comments of interviewees - if they only give seconds to the prime minister, how long do you think they will give you?, if you can't say something controversial in a few seconds it wont get aired on the evening news. Also be aware that the media are loathe to give publicity to pot politics but they love to promote 'reefer madness' at every opportunity.

Be prepared to be arrested for the cause, although in reality the chances are pretty slim, but don't make it easy for them by being really naughty.

... and above all - have fun.

Good luck.
