Plants wilting while lights are off

Recommended Posts

Hey yall :)

My plants are about 5 weeks old under 600w hps and every time the light goes off some seem to wilt pretty bad but when the light comes back on they stand up again.

The light isnt too close as im monitoring the tempreture at the top of the plants, which is about 26,27 degrees

what would be causing them to wilt whilst the lights are off?

help appreciated

P.S. i'll have some pics as soon as i can figure out how to put em on here

I think leaf-drooping during lights-off is a fairly normal thing actually.

(My plants do the same).

I hypothesised that it was because the plants don't need as much surface area in the dark (because they're not photosynthesising) and the leaves "sag" saving energy used supporting them - which is then used to grow during the lights-off phase.

(As stated: this is a guess, not a fact).

Are you shutting the watering system down as well? They don't need feeding/watering while they are asleep, but as the others have said a little droopiness in the mornings can be quite normal.

As long as your medium remains moist throughout the dark period that is fine. The plant's metabolic functions still continue in the dark period just at a much slower rate. Excess sugar produced during the lights on period is used for energy and water is still absorbed through the roots. Thats why you need to keep ventilation going in the dark period, to take care of the continuing transpiration to prevent mould...
