Cloning using a 400watt HPS

Recommended Posts

well due to a few things going on in my ghetto, i have ended up with a second 400watt HPS and will be losing my cloning gear :thumbdown a long story short, the light and cloning gear belonged to a friend who borrowed my piece of shit car, since i never got the car back, we called it even for the grow gear minus the cloning equipment :thumbdown

ok well my problem is being on the dole, i cant fork out the money to buy the equipment for myself and i need to take cuttings within 2 weeks...

what i was thinking is buying one of those humidity domes from big w for $20, put a small amount of water in the bottom of it and use a cookie cooling grill to suspend the cubes just above the water...since i only have 400watt HPS lighting, i assume the light will have to be pretty much as far away from the cuttings as possible as the intensity of the light could do damage....but im just not sure its possible to root cuttings under those conditions....

if anyone can offer any advice on how i can root the cuttings i would be forever gratefull as im not willing to let my strains die out without a fight :smoke

The humidity domes usually come with an insert that keep the cubes off the bottom of the tray.

Yes, you can use the 400w by keeping it up high or you can grab a CF while you are at the shop an stick that over the humidity dome.

I used an old bedside lamp to fit this CF into the cloning cupboard I am making at the moment, the lamp is suspended from the shelf above using the remodelled wire frame from the old shade.

:)

do you mean those green seedling pots that are stuck together like a 6 pack of beer?

i actually have a bed side lamp with a CF in it next to me, the only problem is its one of those touch lamps and it makes the fluro flicker like crazy :)

to setup something like you did, i'd probably need to buy another normal lamp and dismantle it or just buy the the power cord with the light socket at the other end....any ideas on how much that could set me back?

seriously, i cannot really afford to spend much more than $30 but if need be, i should be able to put a few bills off and spend like $50-60 so if it would be less than that, i'll just buy all the shit straight up on wednesday :(

Try around the op shops and second hand stores, condition of the base or doesn't really matter, old desk lamps and such can be used too.

Here's a picture.

There is nothing wrong with cloning under a 400watter. At first keep it high up but as soon as the clones look like rooting gradually lower it down. There is no need with the water under the cubes either. I have actually found plants root and establish faster under a HID, it seems to give them a jump start. You just have to be a bit careful during the first few days. Mist the dome, if they look like struggling, but I'm a believer in keeping clones as dry as they can be while not totally wilting, I believe they root faster this way.

Hey Tom

If that's a 130w cf those 5L rectangular olive oil cans make excellent reflectors

Just cut the top out wth a can opener, then cut halfway around the other end with the can opener. Cut the can lenthways and fold out to form batlike winks.

Just put a hole through the base of the can to mount the light fixture.

Works great

I can post a pic tomorrow...

thanks for the picture tom, thats exactly what i want for under the cubes but i figured if it didnt have one, i was going to just buy a cookie cooler tray.....

i intend on having water under the cubes to give the chamber extra humidity because without the water, the cubes would dry right out + it would take longer to root...

when it comes to the moisture level of the cubes, stonedas told me pretty much the same thing but its hard to keep it at that level....i have found a small watering thats just enough to wet the cube without any runoff once a day is usually enough to get them rooting very fast + a few mists a day in the first 3-4 days never hurts :)

thats a pretty good idea, except that you can pick up a small batwing reflector for like $30 :( spose for people like me on the dole it could be very well worth looking into so i cant wait to see your picture of it tomorrow :thumbsup

bro u dont need clone domes and all that bull. u can root ur clones on a window sil in a glass of water and it wont cost u a cent.

what i do is:

peat pux

1 bucket

glad wrap

1 saucer

take ur cuttings and wak em in ur peat pux.

grab ur bucket and put about .2cm water in the bottom.

put ur saucer in upside down to create an island.

put ur clones in the bucket. donst have to be perfect just as long as the water isnt touching the peat.

cover the top of the bucket with glad wrap n thats it.

if u used a rooting powder or gel you should see roots in a week or two.

if u use no hormones expect to wait 3 or 4 weeks.. maybe longer

wont cost u a bit :)
