MORRIS IEMMA, medical cannabis draft exposure bill

A bit over two years ago, (May 20, 2003 to be exact), Bob Carr, illustrious leader of the state of NSW for over ten years, stated on parliamentary record the following:

"The complexity of an issue does not provide a licence to walk away while ordinary people suffer and acquire criminal records, simply for treating their illness and relieving their suffering in the only way that works for them.

With a sensible mixture of common sense and compassion we can make a medical cannabis regime work in this state, as it works in other jurisdictions around the world.

That is the governments intention and I look forward to introducing the draft exposure bill at the earliest available opportunity."

August 2nd 2005 Bob handed the reigns of the state over to his Health minister, (who was his newly appointed health minister when Bob made the announcement btw).

So now we have the right Honourable Morris Iemma as the premiere of NSW.

It's his first real day in office today, let's jump all over his email box and fill it with requests for the legislation to be introduced forthwith.

hey Generic,

Good to hear from you. I took the non-confrontational approach when writing to the new premier last week (as follows).

31/7/05

Dear Mr Premier,

Congratulations on your recent elevation to the state’s top job. When

asked by friends last week who I thought would get the position I

replied “Morris Iemma” and I was personally thrilled that ‘my choice’

had got up.

A decade ago I wrote to your predecessor with my congratulations,

urging him to consider the issue of medical cannabis. Over the next ten

years, Mr Carr ended up doing more for the cannabis patients of NSW

than any other Premier -  setting up Wayne Hall’s expert working

party, calling for public submissions and then the announcement in the

House that a 4 year trial would commence.

Unfortunately he was unable to make the important final step of either

making cannabis available to patients or allowing them to use cannabis

without fear of prosecution. Now with his resignation, the patients of

NSW are left feeling somewhat in limbo.

What now for the seriously ill patients of NSW, Mr Premier? I am

assuming that your commitment will be no less compassionate than

your predecessor and hopefully more rewarding - so that patients can

improve their quality of life at a time when they are most vulnerable,

free of the fear of criminal sanctions.

I look forward to your consideration of the issue and thank you in

advance for your time.

Yours sincerely

Justin Brash
