  1. you were right first time jimbo just put the cubes into the medium when there are some roots showing through a bit... dont try to remove the rockwool.
  2. hey notdave i trained a couple of mums with bonsai wire with good success. the wire i bought came with some nifty diagrams on the back of typical tying /winding methods. the spiralling effect seemed to work well as the plant can then grow into a similar spiral as the wire and not cut off the sap flow. give it a go mate and let us know how you go
  3. hey budman... sorry to here about your cattle dilemma... as far as mulch go's,i use lucerne straw, it is organic and is suitable for veggies and mj alike.... good luck with the masticating bovines.
  4. great idea jess.... how about a VC for mr. nice himself... howard marks. for services rendered.
  5. well researched answer kl... thanks for your info. respect
  6. well done guys... some good names there ps. come on budman, get this diary on the go, u can journal your veggies in it too.
  7. and finally, bed no 4 which has the tomato, chilli, basil and some red mignonette oh and strawberries... the tomato is a burkes backyard, its from the rouge de marmande family... i have other seeds in waiting to pop
  8. hey budman as promised, some pics of my organic intensive kitchen garden. it is 4 small beds a la cundall's 4 bed rotation system ( couldnt stick rigidly to the plan but it is close)
  9. that particular mesh "welded wire mesh 50x50" only comes in rolls in bunnings bm. but it is not too expensive i'm not sure but $30 - 10m comes to mind, maybe $35 but it has many uses in the garden
  10. i have to say... this thread is a good example of why ozstoners is so valuable. a range of intelligent and experienced advice on a problem, i feel proud to be a part of this site. a general slap on the back all round i feel
  11. no closet... the net pots should not touch the water at all. the bottom of the net pot should be 10-20mm above the water line. the action of bubbles bursting at the surface of the water provides a sort of mist or spray that keeps the net pot moist. during the first week or two i do take a litre or two of the nutrient solution and pour it thru the net pot. this is just to make sure that the roots are getting fed while they are small and buried deep within the clay balls. but once roots show thru the net pot i just let the misting effect do its job. hth
  12. g'day acidphiend i dont see why a large area scrog wont work... but for my 2 cents, i think you have hit the nail on the head. i reckon having the screen attached to the bucket rather than the walls of the room is the way to go. this makes the plants moveable for maintenance without too much bother. whereas if the screen is attached to the room, the plants are locked in to the space once they have grown through the screen a bit. give it a whirl mate, and take lots of pics
  13. no, sorry closet, that doesn't make sense to me. how will the first stem to reach the screen end up a foot higher? surely, once it has reached the screen it will be bent and weaved continually thru the screen, thus not gaining much height above the screen. each time a growing tip is long enough to bend thru to the next adjacent hole in the mesh it will be bent into the horizontal plane of your screen. i hope this helps, but i will try to do a diagram to explain it better...
  14. hey closet grower "how long should the shoots be coming thru the screen" i get the impression that you have vegged your plants out for some time and then added the scrog screen later on. correct me if i'm wrong. i personally have the screen in place from the get go. then as the main stem of the plant is the first one to penetrate the screen, it is the mesh size that dictates how far above the screen each stem has to grow before training. for example, i use a 50mm^2 mesh, so i wait for the main stem, the first to get bent, to grow about 75-100mm above the screen. this means that when i come to bend it and train it thru the screeni have sufficient stem to span the 50mm space to the next lateral of the scrog mesh and a further 25-50mm to poke thru the next space, thus anchoring it in position. (its hard to explain in words and i dont have suitable photos) now as the main stem is growing straight up, the secondary growth, lower down the main stem, is growing out at an angle from the main stem, thus taking the shortcut if u like, as opposed to the main stem which has grown straight up, followed by a 90 deg bend (thru the screen) then horizontal growth along the screen. this means that the secondary growth hits the screen at a similiar point that the main stem has reached, thus ensuring all stems propogate thru the screen at a similar rate. i am really stoned and babbling now...... i will return.
