Water-based Agriculture Dates Back Centuries The History of Hydroponics by Danny Danko Hydroponic cultivation—the growing of plants without soil—is a science as ancient as the fabled Hanging Gardens of Babylon and as modern as a future NASA mission to Mars. Over the centuries, the crude agricultural techniques of the Babylonians and Aztecs have been refined into space-age plastic systems in which plants literally defy gravity—growing toward a centrally placed light source like planets revolving around the sun. One day, hydroponics may ultimately provide solutions for massive global problems such as feeding the developing world, combating deforestation, and growing herb …

i'll post some pics up later tonight, but i'm having a problem and it could be from a few possible causes, the first me not knowing what i'm doing. i've set up a recirculating system, the recirculating bit works fine but not the circulating bit. obviously pics will help but the system is fed by a 400 L p/h pump 13mm. it requires a head height of about 1m and i'm finding there isn't enough pressure in the hose (which has 1 x 13mm end plug either side of its 1.5m length). i have 5 x 4mm flex tube coming off the one piece of 13mm poly tube and the pressure in this tube isn't equal either. normally only 2 out of the 5 hoses will work, although if you manually syphon the wat…

Ok so here's the story. I was doing my normal grow and my HPS 1000W Ballast kicked the bucket. Actually I turned it on for the first time during this grow and it smoked and then died. Either way it was about 5 years old so it is time for a new one.(Got 2 Daytek 600w's) on order. So I decided to do a little experiment. I am flowering with my 1000W MH with a little twist. I got a 400W HPS from my brother for free as he is now getting all his stuff from me. So I set the Light on the bench behind my Flood Drain Table and made it so only one plant was being hit by the light Directly. The results are interesting. The plant receving HPS Light as well as MH is producing mu…

G'day Tom, I was wondering if you could post a pic of your old system of RUN TO WASTE. I've found myself in a position whereby I need to run a "passive" system for a crop or two. I don't think I'll have any worries to hurdle, but seeing as you've run with it for so long, you'd know of any traps I might fall into. What I plan to do is to fill some pots within 2 or 3 inches of the rim with expanded clay balls, and then top them off with loose flock. I have a 20 litre drinking water drum here, the kind with the moulded handle in top, with a tap screwed in the bottom. I'll rig something up to fit into the tap thread at the bottom, and set it up high, to gravity feed. T…

My name is FORCONI Marc-Antoine, I am 21 years old and I’m a second-year student in a French university of agriculture and management, LaSalle Polytechnique in Beauvais. At the end of our second year, we have to do a 5 month training period abroad. The aim of this period is to gain valuable work experience and new techniques and to learn about life in another country while improving our English. Indoor culture is really a passion for me, I am lucky enough to be able to combine this interest with what I learn at school, and I would like to develop it even further by doing this training period of 5 months in a growshop in Victoria area (the period from July 15th to December…

Hi Guys, I am about halfway through my first grow, growing 15 plants in pots of coco under a 600w HPS light in a grow tent. I was thinking about doing a more advanced Hydroponic setup for my next grow as it is very time consuming watering each of the buckets. I was thinking of building a ebb and flow system nut I wanted to get some advice about what everyone here thinks is the easiest hydroponic system to use and also what everyone believes is the best hydroponic system to use. Any advice would be great, also if someone could give me some advice on building a system or point me in the direction of a web page that would be fantastic

Hi! Been looking around the forums for a while and have done a little soil plant experiment earlier (killed by fungus gnats). Now i'm looking at this Mr. Green video series on youtube (search "chronic mr green") and it looks like a good starting point. I like the fact that everything is explained. Just wondering if you guys have seen this and have any opinions on anything that should be done slightly differently without deviating too much from the original instructions. 1 thing i will try differently is doing my clones with the seasol method Will do my shopping from bunnings and a local hydro shop/ebay.

And why? I know each person has their own particular method, some may be similar...but what methods are you using and why? Of course the two key words are sog and scrog but within each of thse there are vast varieties....so if anyone feels like going into a bit of detail about what we shall call a theoretical setup...including style of growing and wattage Feel free.....Ive been scrogging it for the last 5 years and am looking to ditch the mesh and do something different...and no not have 200 plants on the go at once....
