Driving under the influence of cannabis almost doubles the risk of a fatal road crash, finds a study published online by the British Medical Journal. However its share in fatal crashes is significantly lower than those involving alcohol. The study took place in France and involved 10,748 drivers who were involved in fatal crashes from October 2001 to September 2003. All drivers underwent compulsory tests for drugs and alcohol. A total of 681 drivers tested positive for cannabis (7%) and 2096 for alcohol (21.4%), including 285 for both (2.9%). Men were more often involved in crashes than women, and were also more often positive for both cannabis and alcohol, as were th…

What do you guys/gals think of his message. It seems too me that he could have made a comfortable life for himself through the seed industry if he had kept a lower profile i.e he didn't run for all those political posts. I understand that his aim was to legalise the mj industry through his posts but as we know the mainstream public wouldn't like the idea of some 'pot head' in any office or position. I see it as once his profile and influence got larger the LEO's had no option but to shut him down. Sure LEO's have better things to do than to raid a seed bank (rapes, assaults, theft etc) but the U.S government probably realised his 'influence' in the mj industry was a f…

NEVADA COUNTY — Investigators in Nevada County are checking out an apparent new type of illegal drug that turned up during a bust there this week. On Tuesday, officers from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force, served a search warrant at the residence of Zachary Michael Fisher, 22 years old, on Sutton Way, in the Nevada Woods Apartment complex in Grass Valley. While conducting the search, officers said they discovered marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, suspected LSD, and a white powdery substance, suspected of being a new hallucinogenic drug called 2C-I (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenethylamine). Officers also said they located evidence of an indoor marijuana grow…

Biting into the science behind the "marijuana munchies," American researchers have uncovered clues to pot's effect on appetite. Their insights might also lead to drugs that could help increase -- or curb -- wayward appetites. The team of researchers at Columbia University, in New York City, didn't focus on the drug itself, but rather on the body's own version of pot's principal ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Naturally produced cannabinoid molecules, called endocannabinoids, are drawn to the hypothalamus -- a region of the brain that regulates hunger and other basic functions such as memory, perception and movement. Researchers have long known that once en…

SAN FRANCISCO -- Drug Enforcement Administration agents raided four Bay Area medical marijuana operations seizing 839 plants worth nearly $2 million, DEA Public Information Officer Casey McEnry said Wednesday. The daylong enforcement operation kicked off Tuesday around 7 a.m. with two simultaneous crackdowns at a San Francisco home and a Penngrove, Sonoma County, barn, McEnry said. During those raids, DEA agents confiscated about 339 pot plants, paperwork and a large amount of cash believed to be marijuana sales profits, McEnry said. A midday raid of San Francisco's HopeNet, run by previously searched and detained homeowners Steve and Cathy Smith, was postponed unti…

I've smoked for over 30 yrs and its rare I've ever had more than an ounce or 2 ...tops ... way too much money to tie up in weed .... so I think that Sir Ian is right ... Terminal cancer patient fined $2,000 for marijuana By Tom Finnegan LIHUE » A cancer patient with a medical marijuana license from California said he was relieved that he avoided jail time after being sentenced last week for promotion of marijuana. Keith Bierlich of Kilauea was instead fined $2,000, despite using the marijuana for medical purposes. Bierlich has asbestos cancer in his stomach and esophagus, according to his lawyer. Bierlich was arrested last year with 1.2 pounds of marijuana that was shipped to him from the mainland. That is well above the legal amount for someone with a medical marijuana license to legally possess. Instead, he was charged with fi…

Cannabis: the final word 5 Dec 2005 A risk to mental health, or a boon for people with MS? Both, says Barbara Lantin Why can't people make up their minds about cannabis? A recent issue of a tabloid newspaper carried news of an Australian study that showed that four out of five people with severe schizophrenia had been regular marijuana smokers in their youth. A few pages later, it included an article extolling the virtues of a cannabis-derived medicine for multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Cannabis: 'what is needed now is education' The Home Office insists that cannabis "is still a controlled drug, and possession, production and supply are still illegal", but last…

Hindustan Times - Editorial Grass is greener in Britain December 3, 2005 Anyone for restoring some cultural pride and independence? If you thought it’s silly for Indians to blindly pick up the term ‘Middle East’ and use it to describe a region that clearly lies to our West, listen to this. Britain has just rejigged its drug laws and now people in the country can possess cannabis without being picked up by the police. The new law simply maintains that selling the cannabis sativa plant in its various forms is still a crime. If one disregards the slightly Kafkaesque situation posed there for marijuana-users who don’t grow their own herb — “Where do you get the cannab…

http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread21350.shtml Amsterdam -- A coalition of Dutch political parties unveiled a plan on Friday for a pilot programme for regulated marijuana farming, and threatened a showdown in parliament if the government tries to block it. Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner opposes authorised cannabis cultivation because it would set the Netherlands another step apart from the rest of Europe. “The minister’s opinion is that this plan is in conflict with Dutch and international law,” said spokesman Wibbe Alkema. Under current Dutch policy, marijuana and hashish are theoretically illegal but police don’t fine smokers for possession of less than 5…
