03 April 2006 By ESTHER HARWARD AND YVONNE TAHANA Whangamata police have made one of their biggest cannabis busts in years. A 52-year-old Whangamata man has been arrested after police claim they found him inside a "substantial" cannabis plot in the Parakiwai Valley, south of the town. They said the man was carrying a large amount of cannabis in a backpack. He faces drug and firearms charges after the discovery of a .22 rifle and ammunition at a well set-up campsite nearby. Detective Simon Everson at Waihi police said the cannabis find was the biggest in the Waihi-Whangamata area in two years. The haul was made as part of an annual campaign by police whic…

POLICE closed down two more cannabis factories last week - using thermal imaging equipment - and seized an estimated £140,000 worth of the drug. In an attempt to get on top of the problem of cannabis production, bobbies on the beat are now being given handheld cameras - which show the heat emanating from the factories. Last Thursday drugs officers swooped on two addresses - one in Braemar Road and the other in Roslyn Road, South Tottenham - and seized large amounts of plants and growing paraphernalia. It is estimated the haul was worth more than £140,000. Binh Van Dong, 48, of Braemar Road, was arrested and charged with cultivation of cannabis, possession with int…

TEENAGERS are more likely to smoke cannabis than cigarettes, it was claimed yesterday. And nearly twice as many youths are using cocaine than ever before, according to a study. The annual survey by Edinburgh sex-and-drugs advice group Crew 2000 said under-16s are most likely to take drugs at home or in a friend's house. They found 67 per cent of those who took part in their questionnaire had taken cannabis while 52 per cent had used tobacco. Crew 2000 manager John Arthur said: "Cannabis is so widely used now that people shouldn't really be surprised. "Cannabis has been around in youth culture for more than 40 years and it's pretty much normalised in large sectio…

George Michael has been given a police caution for possession of cannabis. The superstar singer admitted the offence and accepted the punishment at an early morning meeting with police in London yesterday (29.03.06). The caution could be problematic for the star's career in the US - where officials can refuse visas for drug arrests. Michael was originally arrested for two drug offences after being found slumped over the steering wheel of his car in London's West End last month. But the second drug - initially thought to be popular clubbers' drug GHB, also known as liquid ecstasy - turned out to be legal substance amyl nitrate. A police spokesman said at the time…

Police use thermal imaging to uncover cannabis factories Thermal imaging cameras are being used by police to reveal homes concealing secret cannabis factories. The hand-held equipment detects the extreme heat created by lighting systems used in the intensive rearing of marijuana plants. Properties where cannabis is being grown will release up to 10 times the amount of heat of an average family home. Police said the crop from just one house can be worth more than £70,000. Officers in London have successfully used the cameras for the first time in the Haringey area of the capital. They patrolled residential streets looking for suspicious heat emissions from buil…

Police seize millions of dollars of cannabis plants 22 February 2006 Police have seized nearly 5000 cannabis plants from plots around the Nelson region over the last five days after a helicopter spotting blitz. Thirteen people now face prosecution over the haul reportedly worth millions of dollars. In one bust 70 plants up to 4m tall were discovered in Golden Bay. He said this was now standard practice among growers who didn't want wildlife interfering wi…
