The minister in charge of the government's drugs policy has admitted that he has smoked cannabis. Vernon Coaker, a former government whip who was appointed Home Office under-secretary of state in the reshuffle earlier this month, said he tried the drug at university. "When I was a student, I took one or two puffs of marijuana but that was it. I think it was once or twice," he told the Coventry Evening Telegraph. The MP for Gedling in Nottinghamshire insisted he had never taken hard drugs, and did not enjoy the cannabis experience, thinking afterwards: "I'm not doing that." Mr Coaker is not the first politician to come clean – in 2000, five members of the shadow ca…

Cannabis 'Best for Pain Relief' After Operations May 17, 06:51 PM By MARK PRIGG CANNABIS is a far more effective painkiller than existing drugs following surgery, a study by London scientists has found. Researchers at Imperial College London and the Medical Research Council said a cannabis plant extract can provide highly effective pain relief for patients after major surgery such as knee replacements. Dr Anita Holdcroft of Imperial College London, who led the study published today in the journal Anesthesiology, said: "Pain after surgery continues to be a problem because many of the commonly used drugs are either ineffective or have too many side effects. "These…

Author:HAMISH MACDONELL AND SHAN ROSS Date: Mon 1 May 2006 Source: http://news.scotsman.com/politics.cfm?id=648742006 Copyright: The Scotsman JOHN REID, the Defence Secretary, has insisted that he has no idea where the cannabis resin came from that was found by police at his Scottish home. The amount found in a guest room was "minuscule," he said, and insisted there was no suggestion that he or any of his family were involved. Police found less than one gram of the drug - with a street value of 85p - during a routine security sweep of his house last week. Dr Reid was on ministerial business abroad when police specialists with sniffer dogs swept his house in the…

Cannabis Painted on High Street House Must Go LITCHFIELD, Conn. -- A man who spray-painted large cannabis leaves on his house has agreed to remove the bright green paintings as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. Christopher Seekins, of Winsted, was arrested in October when police discovered about 100 marijuana plants in his house. He said they were hemp and part of a research project. After his arrest, Seekins painted images of the green leaf on his Victorian-style house, each accompanied by the word "hemp." Town officials say they received several complaints because Seekins' home _ on High Street _ is visible from Winsted's main thoroughfare. Seekins has …

Marijuana is medically useful, whether politicians like it or not IF CANNABIS were unknown, and bioprospectors were suddenly to find it in some remote mountain crevice, its discovery would no doubt be hailed as a medical breakthrough. Scientists would praise its potential for treating everything from pain to cancer, and marvel at its rich pharmacopoeia—many of whose chemicals mimic vital molecules in the human body. In reality, cannabis has been with humanity for thousands of years and is considered by many governments (notably America's) to be a dangerous drug without utility. Any suggestion that the plant might be medically useful is politically controversial, whate…

It was just another quickfire raffle at work – but the prize wasn't the usual meatpack or frozen chook. Instead, the winner would take home an ounce of sticky marijuana heads. And ticket seller Timothy Andrew Murphy's number was up when someone called the police. In the New Plymouth District Court yesterday, an embarrassed but smiling Murphy (25), of New Plymouth, admitted he was busted selling raffle tickets at his work on April 7. Judge Louis Bidois asked Murphy if he had lost his job as a result. Murphy confirmed he had, but said in his defence: "It's been done before." Judge Bidois said the scheme was doomed to fail, because when Murphy asked people to buy…

Marc Emery is not your average international drug kingpin. The man described by the American Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as Canada's biggest trafficker and self-styled "Prince of Pot", who faces the death penalty if convicted in the United States, freely admits to having made millions from marijuana. He ensures as many people as possible know about it and even listing his profession as "marijuana seed vendor" on his tax returns. In Canada, possession of less than 30g of marijuana or seeds carries a 12-month prison sentence and a $1 000 fine, but the law is almost never enforced, making marijuana all but legal. The proof of this is everywhere. Cafés in a Vancouver di…

A felony child abuse charge has been filed against the 26-year-old mother of a baby who tested positive for cannabis after its birth at Medcenter One April 15. Vanessa Laducer, of Bismarck, has been charged with child abuse for willfully inflicting injury on her minor child by using marijuana while she was pregnant, a Class B felony, said Julie Lawyer, a Burleigh County assistant state's attorney. Lawyer said the child tested positive for marijuana at birth. At a recent bond hearing, South Central District Judge Bruce Romanick set Laducer's bond at $1,500 cash or surety. A bond condition imposed allows Laducer to have supervised visits with her baby, Lawyer said. La…

Congressman Mark Souder has been busy in his personal war on drugs. As well as fighting against the legalisation of cannabis for medical use, the Indiana Republican has slipped a provision into a bill calling for the fungus Fusarium oxysporum to be used as a biological control agent against drug crops in foreign countries. The CIA, however, has had moral doubts about using the fungus. In 2000, a CIA official told The New York Times that it was unsafe both for humans and for the environment: "I don't support using a product on a bunch of Colombian peasants that you wouldn't use against a bunch of rednecks growing marijuana in Kentucky." The Department of Agriculture an…

FDA Rejects Marijuana for Medical Uses By LOU KESTEN, Associated Press Writer Fri Apr 21, 12:07 AM ET WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that it does not support the use of marijuana for medical purposes. ADVERTISEMENT The FDA said in a statement that it and other agencies with the Health and Human Services Department had "concluded that no sound scientific studies supported medical use of marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no animal or human data supported the safety or efficacy of marijuana for general medical use." A number of states have passed legislation allowing marijuana use for medical purposes, but the FDA said, "T…

03 April 2006 By ESTHER HARWARD AND YVONNE TAHANA Whangamata police have made one of their biggest cannabis busts in years. A 52-year-old Whangamata man has been arrested after police claim they found him inside a "substantial" cannabis plot in the Parakiwai Valley, south of the town. POLICE closed down two more cannabis factories last week - using thermal imaging equipment - and seized an estimated £140,000 worth of the drug. In an attempt to get on top of the problem of cannabis production, bobbies on the beat are now being given handheld cameras - which show the heat emanating from the factories. Last Thursday drugs officers swooped on two addresses - one in Braemar Road and the other in Roslyn Road, South Tottenham - and seized large amounts of plants and growing paraphernalia. It is estimated the haul was worth more than £140,000. Binh Van Dong, 48, of Braemar Road, was arrested and charged with cultivation of cannabis, possession with int…
