Still No Right to Holy Smoke Jacob Sullum August 11, 2008, 4:32pm reason ... free minds and free markets http://reason.com/blog/show/128038.html Church of Cognizance founders Dan and Mary Quaintance, whose case I discussed in my June 2007 reason story about religious use of drugs, are scheduled to be tried in Albuquerque this month on federal marijuana charges. The Quaintances, who were caught near Lordsburg, New Mexico, in 2006 with 172 pounds of marijuana, tried to get the charges against them dismissed by arguing that prosecuting them for possessing cannabis, their church's sacrament, violates the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). A federal judge…

Former anti-marijuana lobbyist switches sides By Mike Soraghan Posted: 08/14/08 11:51 AM [ET] The Hill http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/former...2008-08-14.html The last time the House debated medical marijuana, David Krahl trod the halls of Capitol Hill lobbying against the legislation as deputy director of the Drug Free America Foundation. Now, he’s ready to lobby for allowing medicinal use of marijuana, and do anything he can to support it. So far, no one has asked him for help, but in a recent letter to medical marijuana bill sponsor Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), he proclaimed that he’d reversed his position on whether cannabis can be a medicine. …

Well this can't be good..... Full article here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtm...ciprints107.xml Basic point is, that a new technology now gives police the ability to to detect THC (and other drugs) in fingerprints. So for example if you get arrested and they fingerprint your house or car or something you were holding, they can now detect from the oils from your fingers that formed the fingerprint on the object they fingerprinted if you had been doing drugs.

Members of Congress Demand An End To Pot Possession Arrests Wednesday, July 30, 2008: At a press conference held this morning, members of Congress called on their fellow lawmakers to remove all federal penalties that criminalize the possession and use of marijuana by adults. “To those who say that the government should not be encouraging the smoking of marijuana, my response is that I completely agree,” said Representative Barney Frank (D-MA). “But it is a great mistake to divide all human activity into two categories: those that are criminally prohibited, and those that are encouraged. In a free society, there must be a very considerable zone of activity between thos…

After Nanofsky produced his driver's license the police officer asked permission to search the vehicle. In less than two minutes, the officer found a homemade pipe underneath the passenger's seat of the Ford Aerostar belonging to the teenage driver's parents. The minivan was s…

California to legalize Marijuana? 5 August 2008 PR Cannazine http://pr.cannazine.co.uk/content/view/475/1/ California finally has a bill in the works that could be passed as soon as this November that would legalize use and sales of marijuana. Marijuana would still be taxed with a $5 tax to sell an eighth ounce of Marijuana and a $50 tax for the growth of one marijuana plant. If this bill passes, it has many implications, but hardly any of them I see as bad. Many people fear an increase in the number of potheads if this bill is passed but that is not likely. In fact, the legalization of marijuana may actually decrease the number of potheads. Back in the 1920…

Positive local buzz from marijuana bill surprises Clay By Mike Soraghan Posted: 08/04/08 01:01 PM [ET] The Hill http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/positi...2008-08-04.html Rep. Lacy Clay didn’t intend to sign on to a bill legalizing marijuana, but he’s happy so far with the buzz from constituents. The Missouri Democrat was flying with Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) on a congressional trip to Africa earlier this year when Frank asked Clay to co-sponsor his “marijuana bill.” It seemed like a simple request to Clay, who for years has signed on to bills to legalize marijuana for medical purposes. So his answer was “No problem.” He called his staff and told them to …

San Bernardino, San Diego Counties Lose Challenge to Medical Marijuana Law Steven Cuevas August 01, 2008 89.3 KPCC Southern California Public Radio http://www.scpr.org/news/stories/2008/08/0...held_08010.html Proposition 215, California's medical marijuana law, passed nearly twelve years ago. Despite conflicts with federal law, many counties have okayed medical marijuana dispensaries and issued ID cards to patients. But San Diego and San Bernardino counties went a different way. They challenged the law in court. KPCC's Steven Cuevas says they lost that challenge yesterday. Steven Cuevas: The two counties argued the medical marijuana law set up a conflict for deputie…

Legislators aim to snuff out penalties for pot use 30 July 2008 CNNPolitics.com http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/30/frank.marijuana/ The U.S. should stop arresting responsible marijuana users, Rep. Barney Frank said Wednesday, announcing a proposal to end federal penalties for Americans carrying fewer than 100 grams, almost a quarter-pound, of the substance. Rep. Barney Frank's bill would radically curb federal penalties for personal marijuana use. Current laws targeting marijuana users place undue burdens on law enforcement resources, punish ill Americans whose doctors have prescribed the substance and unfairly affect African-Americans, said Frank, flanked…

One spliff, 17 days in court and three years later . . . Charlene Sweeney 28 July 2008 Times Online http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/s...icle4419835.ece A prosecution over cannabis worth about £4, enough for one joint, is believed to have cost thousands of pounds after it took almost three years and 17 days in court to settle. Andrew Latto was caught on October 2, 2005, as he left Perth Prison after visiting a friend. He said he had planned to pass him the Class C drug but thought better of it. On April 6, 2006, Latto, from Methil in Fife, admitted possession with intent to supply cannabis in the prison. The case was adjourned for four weeks before being d…
