Smoking marijuana does not cause long-term harm to the brain, researchers from the University of California in San Diego have found. The findings, concluded from 15 different studies using well-educated young people to assess the long term impact of the drug on adults' neurocognitive abilities, will be published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society's July edition. "We were interested in the question of safety from a neurological point of view" of users of marijuana over a long period of time, said Igor Gray, a professor of psychiatry who led the study. According to the results, though marijuana causes short term harm to memory and learning …

The HEMP Embassy is amazed by the outcry over the high school student at Maclean caught with a bong in his bag. Dealing with reality on this issue is overdue. Spokesperson Michael Balderstone said, "I guess there's no chance of getting the job, but the NSW Dept of Education could hire us as their 'bong disposal unit'. No doubt we're a joke to most, but many young people have more experience and knowledge on cannabis than most of the people preaching to them, and they are interested in hearing from long term users". For example, we are finding many of the young teenagers caught up in smoking pot daily are hooked on tobacco without realising it. We, like many social wor…

A HIGH-ranking police officer has resigned as a Crime and Misconduct Commission investigation continues into the theft of more than $100,000 from a police safe on the Sunshine Coast. District Superintendent Bob Welch, whose office at Maroochydore station contained the safe which held the missing money, recently resigned. It is unclear when Supt Welch's resignation will take effect. He was one of four police officers whose homes were raided by investigators from the Crime and Misconduct Commission in August last year. The raids were believed to have focused on police who knew the combination to the safe. Just over a week after the $113,000 was reported missing, CMC…

GENEVIEVE Hedditch and Jo Neal are typical of a growing number of young women taking more health risks. Both 21, and holidaying in Adelaide from Melbourne, they drink regularly and excessively to "get drunk". Drinking alcohol about three to four times a week is common for Ms Hedditch, with each drinking session usually involving at least six drinks of her favourite whisky and soda or Carlton Draught. Ms Neal also regularly drinks alcohol, enjoying beer and white wine on about three occasions each week. They are typical of a new study which has found binge drinking, illicit drug-taking, no exercise and unsafe sex are among the risks young women are more frequently …

Sniffer dogs would be re-introduced to Darwin and Alice Springs airports to stop drug trafficking, a federal senator said yesterday. Federal Senator Bronwyn Bishop made the pledge after a tour of Top End Aboriginal communities last week. Senator Bishop said she was shocked by the revelation that children aged as young as 10 smoke cannabis in the Territory. Senator Bishop, who chairs the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, said she was shocked by levels of juvenile drug use at communities. The committee held public hearings last week in Darwin, Wadeye and Nguiu. She said drug use was stopping community children obtaini…

Four students suspended last week for allegedly smoking cannabis at a sports carnival have taken Supreme Court action so they could sit exams this week and play in a football grand final. Justice Barry O'Keefe on Friday granted an injunction to the Maclean High School students - a year 8 boy and two boys and a girl from year 10 - that temporarily lifted the 11-day suspensions handed out to them by the school principal the previous day. Louise Goodchild, the chief solicitor for the National Children's and Youth Law Centre, said the students "vigorously deny" possessing or taking drugs. The "draconian" suspensions were based on "the uncorroborated stories of other chi…

A Darwin business has been issued with a drug house notice. Police yesterday refused for legal reasons to disclose the name or nature of the firm. The first notice was issued under the Territory Government's tough new anti-drug laws. Police stressed the business had received only one of three notices needed to start court proceedings to have it declared a drug house. Once a property is declared a drug house an irridescent green notice is posted outside. The Northern Territory News has obtained figures that show since April 17, about 464g of cannabis and 143g of amphetamines have been seized by police from suspected drug houses across the NT. Four people have b…

A father of two has been jailed for six months for cultivating cannabis at home using sophisticated equipment, including an ozone generator. Humpty Doo resident Dwight Anthony Brieffies, 42, was caught with 6.085kg of cannabis and four plants in a concealed grow room. He told the Supreme Court the drug was for personal use _ even though he admitted it would have taken him two years to smoke his crop. Brieffies, who was convicted of a similar offence a year ago, said he used cannabis because he had trouble sleeping after separating from his wife. Police raided Brieffies' home in February this year and discovered the 6kg stash of cannabis and two elaborate grow …

Below is a quote from the green party SA bill from Hansard. We all need to call our pollies & make them be aware that it is not their god given right to decide our medication. Would you ask a plumber to pescribe cures for ailments - then why let pollies decide our treatment... It takes only a few minutes to call your local pollie & voice your concerns. If privacy is an issue then don't give your full name to them. Look how the laws have changed for the worse in SA recently - the only people to profit are bikie gangs & organised crime - it's the mr & mrs small time personal growers who are now crims. IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE... CONTROLLED SUBSTANC…

The Crucifixion passion play Come along to Byron Bay, NSW, Australia, July 10 2003 to stand along side local Nimbin legend Rusty Harris as he defends us in the rediculous war on drugs. Be a part of the festival atmosphere. The story in a Nutshell... (as told by generic hippie) Rusty Harris was illegally (or at least immorally, thats yet to be decided) searched by a marijuana sniffing dog named "Thor" while he was lawfully minding his own fucking business on the streets of Byron Bay. The upshot of this for the local Nazi's is it gave them the opportunity to bust Rusty with 2 ounces of pot and $900 in ca$h, which of course, they stole from him. The Nazi's claim the money w…

Q for Hemp SA members/coordinators??? I would like to attend a Hemp SA meeting so please can you send me the details (either through here or pm me) of you're next meeting time & venue. Just my 2 cents worth on the new 4 year trail of medical use for NSW resisdents. I believe that the NSW Labour government are chicken shits! The only reason I see that they are doing this trail is the fact that they wanted the GREENIE prefrences in this last election just gone and had to compromise on their drug policy (which I am sure you all heard about on the news before the election). I guess its a start. Anyway keep voting for the GREENS!
