Granger allowed to appeal drug conviction By SEAN FEWSTER 21nov03 FORMER football strongman Dave "Grave Danger" Granger has been given permission to appeal against his drug conviction – and will challenge the validity of state law. Granger and his lawyers will ask the Court of Criminal Appeal to find South Australia's decades-old drug laws "contravene the Australian Constitution" and are unfair to anyone found with large quantities of cannabis. The Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday granted Granger leave to appeal against his jail term of four years and three months. Earlier this month, Granger, 48, was given a two-year non-parole period for growing 17kg of cannab…

Britain's most senior coroner is warning that hundreds of young people are dying in accidents caused by their prolonged use of cannabis. Hamish Turner, the president of the Coroners' Society, said that the drug, which is often portrayed as harmless, has increasingly been behind deaths that have been recorded as accidents or suicides. In the past year, he estimated that cannabis was a significant contributory factor in about 10 per cent of the 100 cases that he had dealt with in south Devon, where he works. Conversations with his colleagues led him to believe that the scale of the problem elsewhere in the country was equally bad. "Cannabis is as dangerous as any oth…

Paracetamol overdoses need study http://ninemsn.com.au/ Paracetamol poisoning is common in Australasia and not enough is being done to minimise its effects, a new study has found. The survey of emergency departments in Australia and New Zealand found varied responses to cases of Paracetamol overdose, which can cause permanent liver damage or death. The study by two New Zealand doctors was published in the latest issue of the journal of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. The director of emergency medicine at Austin Health in Victoria, Associate Professor George Braitberg, said the results of the study were worrying. "Paracetamol toxicity is a well-r…

In leafy Artarmon, the greenery is not confined to the garden. A cranky cat whose meows worried the neighbours has exposed its owner as a small-scale cannabis grower. Cranky at having been left alone for the weekend, the tabby meowed so loudly that neighbours called the RSPCA. What they found was a fat and happy feline living among a brightly lit jungle of cannabis plants worth nearly $100,000. The cat's owner, Rhonda McIntyre, 49, an unemployed landscape gardener, had turned her green thumb to hydroponic marijuana cultivation while recovering from a back injury. She pleaded guilty in North Sydney Local Court yesterday to possessing an indictable quantity of cannabi…

The family homes of hundreds of Territory defence force families could be searched for drugs, it was learned last night. Personnel based at Palmerston's Robertson Barracks were told by army top brass on Thursday they faced spot checks at their private homes. If they refused to allow the search, the army could obtain search warrants and attend the premises with Territory police. The search threat follows this week's announcement in Federal Parliament 47 soldiers had tested positive for drugs at Robertson Barracks last month. Robertson Barracks commanding officer Brigadier Ash Power was furious at the result. He vowed to continue drug tests of 1st Brigade pers…

ALMOST half of the 100 soldiers drug-tested after a raid on Darwin's Robertson Barracks in October tested positive for "party drugs" such as cannabis and amphetamines, army chief Peter Leahy told a parliamentary committee last night. Lieutenant-General Leahy told the defence estimates committee hearing in Canberra he was concerned that an organised drug ring could have been operating out of the barracks, which houses 3000 personnel, before the extensive raids by civilian and military police. The results of the drug tests were "disappointing" because drug abusers were putting the lives of their colleagues at risk. "We're getting people in the defence force saying t…

Cannabis and plants with an estimated street value of $266,000 have been seized from a property near Bannaby on Saturday by Goulburn police and drug squad detectives. A local man was arrested, charged and bailed to appear in court on a later date in relation to the 52 plants found growing plus seeds, equipment and processed cannabis leaf. Police have issued a warning to dog owners to ensure that their animals are not allowed to run loose after numerous complaints of dogs attacking sheep throughout the Goulburn district. In an Australian first, the Victorian government today moved to give police powers to conduct random roadside drug testing. Under legislation now before state parliament, from July next year roadside drug screening will be used to detect drivers affected by cannabis and speed with a saliva test. Transport Minister Peter Batchelor said drugs were involved in 27 per cent of road fatalities last year. "It clearly indicates that the taking of illicit drugs is a major factor of similar proportions as the over-consumption of alcohol in fatalities on our roads," he said. "The police will be given this equipment as new tools in the road safety campaign. "It will be…
