Demitrios Hantzis, a 38-year-old Sydney building contractor, appeared in Parramatta Bail Court after he was charged on Thursday with several drug offences. Prosecutors allege he was caught on phone taps offering advice on harvesting, cultivating and caring for the cannabis at the property at Narrabri, western NSW, where most of the 3.2 tonnes of the drug was found. Neighbours said two other girls, sisters aged nine and 13, also smoked cannabis and that all three regularly drank alcohol and smoked tobacco. Assistant Secretary Community Services Carol Peltola said last night Family and Children's Service had not yet decided about the fate of the three children. ``Making a decision about what we're going to do depends on a whole range of …

PM - Tuesday, 23 March , 2004 18:40:09 Reporter: Ian Townsend MARK COLVIN: Two and a half tonnes of cannabis landed at the doors of Federal Parliament today, a gift from Queensland. It's the legal stuff, of course, though it did raise a few eyebrows. A frustrated Queensland company has sent each federal politician a 10-kilogram pack of industrial hemp mulch. It's part of a long-running battle to get the Government to relax the restrictions on growing hemp for food and fibre. Ian Townsend reports. IAN TOWNSEND: The mailrooms at Parliament House get the occasional odd item in the post. These individually addressed packs of cannabis posed a few problems, mainly …

Two and a half tonnes of cannabis has been sent to Federal Parliament in a bid to educate politicians about the difference between industrial hemp and marijuana. Philip Warner from Queensland's Ecofibre Industries Limited says too many politicians do not know that industrial hemp is useless as a drug. He says each politician has been sent a 15 kilogram bag of hemp mulch in an effort to change their thinking. "Every time we write to the Federal Government they keep throwing back in our face this thing about hemp being associated with marijuana," he said. "They are not at all assisting in being able to develop a new industry for global consumption. "Our concern i…

FROM today, possession of small amounts of cannabis might not be considered a crime in WA. At a police officer's discretion, a person can have up to 30g and still avoid a criminal record, instead paying a fine up to $150 and going to compulsory drug education classes. And a household will be allowed to grow two cannabis plants without the occupants facing criminal charges. They will be fined $200 and have to go to drug education classes. The changes were recommended at the community drug summit in 2001. The Government's aim is that more people will be referred for medical help for cannabis use and that people in the compulsory education and treatment programs will u…

By GRAHAME ARMSTRONG March 21, 2004 NEW cannabis laws which come into effect tomorrow will increase the risk of physical and mental health problems for young people, Opposition Leader Colin Barnett claims. Mr Barnett said the changes ? making the possession of up to 30g of the drug and the cultivation of up to two plants punishable by fine or an education session ? sent the worst possible message to the community that some cannabis was OK. "There is clear scientific evidence that cannabis use is linked with depression and anxiety in youths and an increased risk of psychotic disorders such as paranoia, manic depression and schizophrenia," he said. "Physical healt…

EXTRAORDINARY powers are set to be given to Queensland police and the Crime and Misconduct Commission as they seek to overcome the threat of terrorism. The Beattie Government has been asked to allow the crime fighters to raid premises without a warrant and conduct surveillance on premises instead of a suspect if they believe a terrorist act is being planned. The Labor-dominated Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee, in its three-yearly review of the CMC, said terrorists should be given less freedom than other criminals. "Terrorist acts are removed from the level of ordinary criminal offences by the nature of their immediate and devastating effects in terms of…

Police in the Great Southern region of Western Australia have seized hundreds more cannabis plants in the Denmark area under Operation High Tide. Ten people have been arrested in recent weeks.
