It was the first trial of the new law in the Barrier Local Area Command, based in Broken Hill and it allows police to stop and search any cars for drugs, not just those they consider suspicious. Sunday May 2, 11:28 AM Greens appeal for uniform cannabis laws The Australian Greens have called for national uniform cannabis laws. Queensland Senate candidate Drew Hutton has used the pro-cannabis Mardi Grass festival in Nimbin in northern New South Wales to launch the party's campaign. He says it is time to declare the Prime Minister's zero-tolerance to drugs approach a failure. He says every state should adopt laws which allow individuals to buy, possess and grow small quantities of marijuana. "You remove, as a part of the criminal justice system of this country, you remove the involvement of the criminal underworld in these sorts of areas and you remove the…

DRUG detection dogs will travel on Central Coast trains from tomorrow. New powers will allow police with dogs to travel on trains from the Coast to Newcastle without the need for search warrants. Police minister John Watkins said the dogs would be used to detect cannabis, heroin, cocaine and amphetamines. "Drug dogs are an excellent front-line policing resource, sniffing out offenders during transit patrols, drug operations and blitzes on the rail network," he said. "They help police target dealers and couriers using the transport network and disrupt drug peddlers' markets by scaring off customers and users." Drug dogs can be used in searches of licensed premise…

POLITICIANS and anti-drug campaigners have labelled an annual festival in northern NSW promoting the use of cannabis as both dangerous and irresponsible. Nimbin's MardiGrass and Cannabis Law Reform Weekend, which will be held for the 12th time on May 1-2, has grown into an international event attracting thousands of visitors. But local federal National Party MP Ian Causley said the event was "totally irresponsible". "This is a celebration of drugs and I don't approve of that," he said. "Many of the arguments that are being put forward by this group for the legalisation of marijuana are being refuted in most of the medical reports." Mr Causley said the police ha…

WHEN police searched Gordon Clark's Surges Bay property in Tasmania last year he handed over a bag of marijuana he said was for his personal use, a court was told yesterday. The Supreme Court in Hobart heard that Mr Clark told police he was going to use it to make marijuana cookies. But prosecutor Michael Shirley told the court that as police continued looking around Mr Clark's property, a detective passed a water tank next to a shed and thought he heard an extractor fan. Searchers moved into the shed where they found, after shifting around some items, a passageway into the tank. Mr Shirley said the tank was separated into three rooms, the walls lined with poly…

The North Shore line, running from Berowra to Central, has been added to other train lines where officers do not need a warrant to search for illicit drugs, Police Minister John Watkins announced yesterday. Handlers and their dogs will now be able to search passengers on train services running as far south as Bomaderry, north to Newcastle and west to Penrith. Drug detection dogs will also chec…

Aboriginal leaders will co-operate in identifying traffickers in alcohol, drugs and petrol in South Australia's Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands, the area's new service delivery co-ordinator, Bob Collins, said last night. After talks with a women's council in Alice Springs this week, Mr Collins said he wanted to make the lands safer for those who lived there. About 50 attended the administrative centre of Umuwa last night with stories of social breakdown. "Services on the lands are bogged in the sand up to the axle and I plan to get them unbogged, I can promise you that," Mr Collins told them. The Pitjantjatjara Lands are Australia's oldest self-governing tribal lands. …

The Howard Government's drug taskforce is launching a new offensive against marijuana, with a booklet that the taskforce's head says will "tell the truth" and combat the "trivialisation" of the drug's dangers. Australian National Council on Drugs chairman Brian Watters yesterday said a "pro-marijuana lobby" had successfully promoted the idea that cannabis was no more dangerous than alcohol and should be legalised. "I think there has been a really concerted effort in some quarters to trivialise its effects," he said. "The pro-marijuana lobby have done very well. They are very, very active." Major Watters said the booklet would counter these perceptions by bringing t…
