POLITICIANS and anti-drug campaigners have labelled an annual festival in northern NSW promoting the use of cannabis as both dangerous and irresponsible. Nimbin's MardiGrass and Cannabis Law Reform Weekend, which will be held for the 12th time on May 1-2, has grown into an international event attracting thousands of visitors. But local federal National Party MP Ian Causley said the event was "totally irresponsible". "This is a celebration of drugs and I don't approve of that," he said. "Many of the arguments that are being put forward by this group for the legalisation of marijuana are being refuted in most of the medical reports." Mr Causley said the police ha…

WHEN police searched Gordon Clark's Surges Bay property in Tasmania last year he handed over a bag of marijuana he said was for his personal use, a court was told yesterday. The Supreme Court in Hobart heard that Mr Clark told police he was going to use it to make marijuana cookies. But prosecutor Michael Shirley told the court that as police continued looking around Mr Clark's property, a detective passed a water tank next to a shed and thought he heard an extractor fan. Searchers moved into the shed where they found, after shifting around some items, a passageway into the tank. Mr Shirley said the tank was separated into three rooms, the walls lined with poly…

Dogs to search for drugs on most trains By Jim O'Rourke April 25, 2004 Sniffer dogs will be allowed to roam almost every train carriage running on the City Rail metropolitan network, randomly checking all passengers for drugs, when new regulations come into effect on Friday. The North Shore line, running from Berowra to Central, has been added to other train lines where officers do not need a warrant to search for illicit drugs, Police Minister John Watkins announced yesterday. Handlers and their dogs will now be able to search passengers on train services running as far south as Bomaderry, north to Newcastle and west to Penrith. Drug detection dogs will also chec…

Ambulances were called for more than 11,000 incidents of non-fatal overdoses of prescription or over-the-counter drugs in Melbourne in the two years to September 2003, up almost 2500 on the previous two years. The numbers are much greater than overdoses of illicit drugs - 1530, excluding heroin - which ambulances attended. Ambulances went to about 1400 heroin overdoses, and 6035 incidents of alcohol-related harm. Women accounted for alm…

Aboriginal leaders will co-operate in identifying traffickers in alcohol, drugs and petrol in South Australia's Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands, the area's new service delivery co-ordinator, Bob Collins, said last night. After talks with a women's council in Alice Springs this week, Mr Collins said he wanted to make the lands safer for those who lived there. About 50 attended the administrative centre of Umuwa last night with stories of social breakdown. "Services on the lands are bogged in the sand up to the axle and I plan to get them unbogged, I can promise you that," Mr Collins told them. The Pitjantjatjara Lands are Australia's oldest self-governing tribal lands. …

The Howard Government's drug taskforce is launching a new offensive against marijuana, with a booklet that the taskforce's head says will "tell the truth" and combat the "trivialisation" of the drug's dangers. Australian National Council on Drugs chairman Brian Watters yesterday said a "pro-marijuana lobby" had successfully promoted the idea that cannabis was no more dangerous than alcohol and should be legalised. "I think there has been a really concerted effort in some quarters to trivialise its effects," he said. "The pro-marijuana lobby have done very well. They are very, very active." Major Watters said the booklet would counter these perceptions by bringing t…

Sydney police on Sunday denied they were embarrassed to be tipped off by journalists that a busy inner-city convenience store was allegedly selling drugs over the counter. The owner of an Oxford Street convenience store was charged on Sunday with drug possession following a police operation launched only after officers were alerted by a newspaper on Friday to alleged drug-dealing in the city's nightclub district. The story published in Sydney's Sunday Telegraph newspaper on Sunday alleges a journalist was able to buy $40 worth of marijuana and an ecstasy tablet by asking for `tally-ho' and `pills' over the convenience store counter. Over four days journalists observ…

Special Minister of State John Della Bosca said the posters were first displayed during the summer holidays and were again targeting students during these school holidays. "The messages will appear in bathroom advertising in cinemas and shopping centres which draw thousands of young people at this time of year," Mr Della Bosca said …

A man today denied deliberately feeding two toddlers spaghetti with a cannabis laced sauce. Anthony John Patten, 22, pleaded not guilty in the South Australian District Court to two counts of administering cannabis to a child. Patten was alleged to have administered the drug to two girls, aged two and four, in September last year at a house in Adelaide's north. He denied the charges in a brief hearing today and was remanded on bail to reappear again next month. An earlier Magistrates Court hearing was told the girls were hospitalised after allegedly eating spaghetti with a sauce laced with marijuana. Patten, who was caring for the two children of a friend, …

By EDITH BEVIN April 13, 2004 The Territory's hydroponic equipment suppliers may be forced to undergo criminal history checks and keep stringent records of who they sell to. Territory police have told the Northern Territory News that they are looking at ``a number of hydroponic suppliers'' over their suspected role in the cultivation of drugs. One Darwin supplier has already been summonsed over his alleged role in supplying equipment for growing cannabis. ``We suspect that there are some hydroponics suppliers involved or assisting in the illicit manufacture of drugs,'' Drug Squad Senior Sergeant Les Martin. Drug squad sources said they had anecdotal evidenc…

HYDROPONIC equipment suppliers are readily offering advice on how to grow cannabis and methods to avoid being caught, an Advertiser investigation has found. A visit to 15 random Adelaide hydroponic equipment suppliers in the past week has uncovered the practice, with everything from prices to instructions and diagrams on how to set-up a clandestine drug laboratory to interested buyers. One shop even offered to provide cannabis seeds "in secret" if hydroponic equipment was bought. All shops recommended specialist equipment needed to create an elaborate secret set-up, including water pumps, pipes, nutrients to help with cultivation, aeration fans, insulation and large…
