Victorian motorists will be the first in the world to be subjected to random roadside saliva testing for illegal drugs. Police today said they expected to screen about 9,000 drivers in the 12-month drug testing trial, which starts on December 13. The tests, which detect cannabis and methamphetamine-based drugs, aimed to cut down on the number of drug-affected motorists dying on the roads, Police Minister Andre Haermeyer said today. News of the roadside tests came after a national survey revealed one in four men under the age of 25 said they had driven a car after taking an illicit drug. The survey of about 2,000 drivers by car insurer AAMI also found 90 per cent o…

Police say they have broken the back of an alleged major national cannabis syndicate operating in Canberra for the past two years. Police involved in Operation Stolid have raided 34 rental homes used for cultivating hydroponic cannabis and seized around $2 million worth of drugs and have arrested 20 people. Detective Superintendent Leanne Close says the crackdown began almost two years ago after a tip-off from South Australian police that members of the syndicate were targeting Canberra. "The operation focussed on an organised criminal syndicate here in the ACT who were primarily using private rental premises to undertake their activities," she said. "They would s…

Jail over largest hash seizure November 11, 2004 FIVE men found guilty of possessing the largest quantity of hashish seized in Victoria have been jailed for at least five years. A Victorian County Court jury found the men were knowingly involved in unloading three tonnes of cannabis resin, with a street value of about $140 million, on August 14, 2001. They unloaded the drug – which was labelled as Finnish coffee – from a shipping container in Campbellfield that had been tracked by the Australian Federal Police. An earlier hearing was told that the men were allegedly associates of murdered crime figure Lewis Moran. David Ciampoli, 44, of Avondale Heights, Robert …

The State Government has announced a 12-month trial of road-side testing for ecstasy, speed and cannabis starting next year. The mobile technology for road-side drug testing has been a long time coming. But now no less than four companies will be competing for the Government contract. Roads Minister Carl Scully says the trial will target heavy vehicle drivers using uppers and downers. “Police will conduct on the spot saliva tests with portable drug scanning machines. They’ll be able to tell within minutes if the driver has taken any of the detectable substances,” Mr Scully said. Police will test for the “active ingredients of substances” taken in the hours lea…

Hundreds of people driving cars, trucks and motorbikes protested against child abuse by joining a convoy which rumbled from the Gold Coast to Brisbane. Organiser Hetty Johnston, an independent candidate for a Queensland Senate position at the federal election, said the rally was a warning to paedophiles that justice would catch up with them. However, Ms Johnston warned that although there was enormous support for action against those who sexually preyed on children, the law was letting children down. The rally, dubbed "Rollin Thunder", was held three days after police revealed they had cracked apart an international paedophile network that was operating in Australia…

One in five parents back cannabis use Almost one in five parents approves of their children experimenting with cannabis, according to a review of the Federal Government's $25 million anti-drugs campaign last year. The review also found that adults without school-age children were more prepared to condone youth cannabis use, provided it did not prompt experimentation with harder drugs. It also suggested that parents tended to overestimate the accessibility of illicit drugs to school-age children but underestimate their willingness to try them if available. A national survey of 604 children aged between 15 and 17 in May and June last year showed 39 per cent had been o…

West Australians, especially parents, are being urged to mount a campaign against the State Government's plans to soften cannabis laws. Liberal leader Colin Barnett yesterday released a report by the party's drug strategy spokesman Simon O'Brien which showed similar policies in South Australia had led to growth in organised crime and drug-related home invasions. Mr Barnett said the report, Decriminalisation Of Cannabis: The Wrong Approach, also showed greatly increased availability of cannabis to young people in SA following changes in its laws and minimal impact on freeing up the court system. Making cannabis a "little bit legal" was sending the wrong message to youn…

The Government’s Criminal Code (Serious Drugs Offences) Amendment Bill 2004 although aimed at drug traffickers and serious drug offences, widens the net and imposes draconian penalties on young people experimenting in or addicted to drugs. Families and Friends for Drug Law Reform calls for the Bill to be withdrawn for reconsideration. “The Bill is not just confined to serious drug offences,” said Brian McConnell, President of Families and Friends for Drug Law Reform, “Events that in plain language would not be regarded as ‘serious crimes’ will be labeled as such with severe penalties” “For example a teenager at a dance party who resells to a friend a single ecstasy t…
