Police have been told to back off from harassing tourists and drug users at Nimbin in northern NSW. A rally, organised by the Hemp Embassy, was held yesterday to protest against what some say is a new wave of police harassment. Police have strengthened their presence in the town, and a special operation included searching overseas visitors on tourist buses for drugs. Hemp spokesman Michael Balderstone says there needs to be better communication between the police and the community. He says most police want cannabis legalised and do not want to waste time arresting people who are stoned. "What they're doing is making no impact at all and I think everyone agrees t…

Arevalo Stagnarro Alberto, 32, was caught with 330 grams of imported and local marijuana, as well as 0.9 grams of hashish on January 18. The drugs were apparently smuggled into Bali in 8 small packages inside a Happy New Year card from Australia, Bali police narcotics division chief Bambang Sugiarto told AAP. "He lives in Australia," he said. "He will be charged under narcotics laws." If convicted he could face up to 12 years in jail. THOUSANDS of music lovers packed into Olympic Park in Sydney today, partying to their favourite bands at the Big Day Out festival. More than 55,000 revellers danced to bands including the Beastie Boys, The Chemical Brothers, The Streets, John Butler Trio, Grinspoon and Powderfinger. But police were not impressed with the number of people arrested for drugs offences. Sniffer dogs at the venue and on Sydney trains helped flush out more than 200 people allegedly carrying drugs such as cannabis, ecstasy, speed, cocaine and heroin. Of the 200-plus people, 21 were charged with supply, police said late tonight, revised down from their earlier figure of 35. One man was c…

A rally will be held this afternoon in Nimbin, in northern NSW, protesting against what some people say is a new wave of police harassment. The rally has been organised by the Hemp Embassy, which wants cannabis legalised. The police presence in Nimbin has strengthened and recently two tourist buses were pulled over and searched by a sniffer dog, and cannabis cautions were given to overseas tourists. Hemp spokesman Michael Balderstone says he wants better communication between the police and the community. "There's so much frustration in town and there's so much...injustice people feel because of the way we're harassed because we're cannabis users, so at least it g…

NEW fears about the dangers of smoking cannabis have been supported by a Tasmanian expert. Launceston psychiatrist Eric Ratcliff said his experience with patients who smoked cannabis was consistent with the alarming findings of new British research. The UK study, reported in The Mercury on Thursday, found one in four cannabis users faced alarmingly higher risks of mental illness -- contrary to the belief that it is a fairly harmless drug. "It soon became evident that patients with schizophrenia who used cannabis did not respond to treatment as well as would otherwise have been expected," Dr Ratcliff said. "Some improved greatly if they stopped using cannabis." …

Lawyers for a Gold Coast student facing death in Bali on drugs charges have accused the Australian government of forsaking their client. "We have lost all faith in the AFP (Australian Federal Police) and the Australian foreign ministry," Vasudeva Rasiah, a member of Schapelle Corby's legal team, said today. "They promised us they would help, but it was lip service all the way. "They have done nothing and now what do we have in her defence? Absolutely nothing." Corby, 27, of Tugun, faces the death penalty under Indonesia's tough anti-drugs laws after customs officers found a plastic zip-lock bag containing 4.2 kilograms of cannabis leaf and heads in her bodyboard b…

Drug gangs hire 'crop sitters' By Kara Lawrence January 13, 2005 ORGANISED crime syndicates are opening franchises across suburban Sydney, renting out houses and installing "crop sitters" to tend to hydroponic cannabis plantations. Raid ... police yesterday seized plants worth more than $600,000. Picture: Justin Lloyd The burgeoning industry, imported from Canada about three years ago, has seen an increase in sophistication and yield of the illegal crops. Police figures show that in 2004 in metropolitan Sydney, at least 70 "hydro houses" were busted by police, who are throwing more resources into tackling the trend. Statewide, the number of detections of…
