The Special Minister of State, John Della Bosca, says the community will be consulted before a venue for the clinic is finalised. "The treatment centre is likely to be operating prior to July this year, so in the...next couple of months the centre should be fully operational," he said. Mr Della Bosca s…

Author:SBS Date:17/5/05 Source:SBS Copyrigth: SBS Australia Was very interesting, heres the link to get the full transcript http://news.sbs.com.au/insight/index.php ill just post what i think was the most important and what i believe is right on the money: JENNY BROCKIE: Alex Wodak, can I involve you in the discussion at this point because you've campaigned long and hard for decriminalisation of drugs over many, many years. Now, when you hear David describing his research and you hear Chris talking about the people turning up in his practice with psychosis and with problems from marijuana, does that shift your view at all about the issue of decriminalisation, for exam…

A LETTER outlining allegations concerning Australian baggage handlers' involvement in drug smuggling would be sent to the Bali court hearing charges against Schapelle Corby, Prime Minister John Howard said today. Mr Howard said the Federal Government had prepared a letter for the court hearing Ms Corby's case, outlining claims that airport baggage handlers in Sydney had used luggage to traffic drugs. "The letter was settled on Friday by the attorney-general," Mr Howard said on Channel 10. The news has been welcomed by Opposition Leader Kim Beazley and comes after Ms Corby made a direct plea to Mr Howard for help. Fifteen people were charged last week after 9.9kg o…

The Crown has asked that a man sentenced to three years' jail for cultivating his second cannabis crop within two years be declared a drug trafficker. Colin Jonathon Hennig grew 362 plants in a remote bush location, the Supreme Court heard. Hennig, 36, pleaded guilty to cultivating a commercial quantity of cannabis. Justice Sally Thomas said Hennig had breached a June 2003 suspended sentence for cultivating cannabis and other drug charges. She restored the unserved 18 months of that sentence. For the latest crop, discounting the sentence for his guilty plea, she sentenced Hennig to three years' jail, concurrent with 18 months for the breach, and ordered that he be…

The Nimbin Hemp Embassy organisers of the annual MardiGrass Cannabis Law Reform weekend say it was probably the biggest crowd ever though nobody was counting! "The rubbish skips were all full by Sunday morning which has never happened before and that's a fair indication." Schapelle Corby's influence was everywhere over the weekend, yellow ribbons, theatre in the rally, banners, and quite possibly one of the reasons for such a big turnout in the rally. "She and the Bali nine have certainly put the war on drugs back on the agenda and I have no doubt the majority of Australians are ready for cannabis law reform. It's no big deal, especially for the new generations who are …

Police raided Mr Pyle's home before dawn on Sunday morning, and allegedly found 1.8g of hashish kept in a plastic bag, a small bottle and a condom box. Police say the web designer has admitted his guilt and faces up to 10 years in prison, and a fine of 500,000,000 rupiah ($68,122). Mr Pyle told The Australian…

THE four sat in the dock in their best Sunday suits, trying to impress the jury. All were perfectly groomed, except for the handcuffs – and the leg-irons. The three-week murder trial that ended on Friday in the Supreme Court in Brisbane was marked by extraordinary behind-the-scenes security and will be remembered by features other than the shackles, which are rarely used in Queensland courts. The jury's verdict of not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter sparked loud weeping from members of the victim's family. The four – Adam Troy Bargenquast, 31, Mark William Holmes, 46, Wade Anthony Davis, 24, and Jon David Farthing, 34 – were remanded in custody for sen…
