Monday View Mike O'Connor 20jun05 Courier Mail Noses go cold tracking drugs Another week looms and with it the ever present chance of having my crotch sniffed by a Queensland Police Service labrador. I read recent reports of the vigilance of our dauntless law enforcers with some alarm, noting that the canine cops were operating in the Toowong area. I live in the Toowong area and have noticed that since the news of the drug doggies broke, the mere sight of a yapper on a leash has been sufficient to send your average, drug-crazed layabout fleeing towards the wooded hills of Mt Coot-tha. I imagine it's only a matter of time before I feel the cold nose of the law nud…

Chris Griffith, City Hall reporter 18jun05 Courier Mail Lawyer warns of drug dog overuse A LEADING Brisbane lawyer has warned that Queensland risks becoming a totalitarian and criminalised society if drug sniffer dogs are allowed to run amok sniffing people at railway stations, sporting events, pubs, restaurants and on the footpath. Lawyer Terry Fisher said police resources were better spent working quietly to catch major drug dealers than conducting what was essentially a sniffer dog PR exercise designed to make the Government look tough on crime. An irate Irish visitor was humiliatingly searched for 15 minutes after a mistake by a drug-sniffer dog at Toowon…

PAMPERED pooches will soon be salivating for a new doggie treat: an upmarket biscuit made from cannabis seed. Tasmanian entrepreneur Ian Rochfort, who has been granted the first licence to use cannabis seed in a food product, will market the Scooby snacks nationally and for export as Hemp Hound Hors d'oeuvres. But dog owners should not expect their pets to develop a fondness for Bob Dylan. The licence issued to Mr Rochfort includes a strict testing regime to ensure the biscuits contain no more than 50mg per kilogram of tetrahydrocannabinols (THC). "So basically, there is no chance your dog will be hallucinating rainbow cats," Mr Rochfort said. The product must a…

Police have charged 27 people with drugs and weapons offences following raids on members of motorcycle gangs in south-east Queensland. Police raided properties on the Gold Coast and several more around Gympie, north of Brisbane, in an operation aimed at the illegal activities of the members of motorcycle gangs and their associates, police said. Detective Inspector John Hartwell said five properties on various parts of the Gold Coast were raided and police recovered drugs and concealable guns. "Four people have been charged with six charges related to possession of illegal weapons and drugs," Detective Inspector Hartwell said. In the Gympie raids, which police said…

The court victory of a man convicted of possessing cannabis has left "improper" searches by police sniffer dogs at the mercy of judges. Rusty Harris's conviction for possessing the drug was quashed by a District Court judge, James Black, who said his decision should not "unduly threaten social stability". Mr Harris, 55, of Nimbin, was sitting in a cafe in Byron Bay when a police dog put its head under the table and made contact with Mr Harris's groin before sitting down next to him. Mr Harris was convicted of possessing 26 grams of cannabis but appealed on the grounds that the evidence obtained during the search should have been excluded. Mr Harris's lawyer, Steve…

THE maximum penalty for cultivating or trafficking a large commercial quantity of cannabis is life imprisonment. Offenders also can be fined up to $525,000 and have their homes seized. Changes to the law in 2002 introduced the concept of a large commercial quantity, which was set at more than 1000 plants, or 250kg. Anyone caught with more than 100 plants or 25kg of plant material can be charged with cultivation or trafficking of a commercial quantity. The maximum penalty for trafficking or cultivation of a commercial quantity is 25 years' jail. Houses used for growing large commercial quantities are automatically forfeited under the Confiscation Act if they ar…

HYDROPONIC cannabis crops are being grown in Melbourne homes by crime syndicates, then exchanged for heroin in Sydney. Police say criminals are using about five rented suburban houses at a time to grow cannabis worth millions of dollars. The operations uncovered in ongoing investigations were "organised crime at its best", Victoria police drug investigation spokesman Detective Superintendent Tony Biggin said. "Cannabis is not a drug of choice for most of these people, just a very lucrative cash crop," Det-Supt Biggin said. The crops of about 100 plants would sell for $250,000, which was enough to buy three 350-gram blocks of heroin worth $1 million each. "The cann…

"Sniffer dogs take to the streets" Chris Griffith Courier Mail 13jun05 QUEENSLAND police are using sniffer dogs to randomly check people for drugs. The tactic has been criticised as verging on "totalitarian". Police confirmed their anti-drugs operation following an Irish tourist's claim that he was subjected to 15 minutes of embarrassment and humiliation after a sniffer dog check at Brisbane's Toowong train station on Thursday morning. The Irish visitor, who asked not to be named, and his friend David Davore had travelled from the city to Toowong when they were intercepted by several uniformed and plainclothes police at the exit point near the station's ticke…

SHE looks like your typical Greek "yiayia", but Vasiliki Hatzis is an expert at clipping marijuana plants - $45 million worth of them. On her 71st birthday the grandmother, who wears black in memory of her late husband, was yesterday given a five-year-good behaviour bond in the District Court for manicuring marijuana. Judge Michael Finnane, found the frail woman, who uses a walking stick, was unlikely to reoffend and had trimmed the plants out of a sense of loyalty to her 73-year-old husband, Vasilios Hatzis. Her arrest in September last year came after police seized $45 million worth of cannabis on the north-western NSW property she lived on. Sitting in a chair on …

A Supreme Court judge has jailed two Mackay men for 18 months each on separate drug-related charges. Lesley Carter, 38, pleaded guilty to possessing more than four kilograms of cannabis. The court heard Carter sold his Harley Davidson for $20,000, with the drugs making up the balance of the sale. Carter claimed he intended to use only half of the four kilograms for "commercial use". Justice Kerry Cullinane jailed him for 18 months to be suspended after six months. In a separate case, John McLellan, 52, will serve three months in jail for growing marijuana in the courtyard of his inner-city townhouse. Police found McLellan with one kilogram of cannabis in plast…

Trent Bruce Torrens didn't have much luck with his efforts to grow a little cannabis for himself and save on electricity, Darwin Magistrates Court heard yesterday. Last September he set up a hydroponics system in the laundry of his Woodroffe residence and tried to grow several plants, prosecutor Sergeant Gavin Kennedy said. On Christmas Eve, he got hold of a cloned plant, which he began to nurture. Torrens then put a heavy-duty magnet on his electricity meter in an attempt to slow it. While waiting for his plant to mature, he bought a small amount of cannabis to smoke and $80 worth of methylamphetamine at a city hotel. That day, February 15, while he was at wo…
