Officer's home raided in corruption probe July 29, 2005 - 12:05PM A policeman's home was raided yesterday as part of an investigation into police corruption. Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina O'Grady said the officer's home was searched because of a suspected drugs link. "It's an ongoing investigation and there's been no charges,'' she said. Sergeant O'Grady said the raid was part of an ethical standards department investigation. It was not connected to the Operation Rakus raids yesterday, in which more than 100 police carried out pre-dawn raids on 16 properties across Melbourne. "It was separate to the other raids,'' she said. Detective Acting Superintende…

TEENAGERS who use cannabis are up to 10 times more likely to develop serious mental illness than those who do not, latest research shows. British scientists have found the drug can cause permanent physical changes to the still-growing brain. That can lead to psychosis and schizophrenia in those worst affected. They also believe early exposure to cannabis increases the risk of users moving on to such harder drugs as heroin. Cannabis is the most used illicit drug in Australia, executive director of Drug and Alcohol Services Council of SA, Keith Evans, said. Anti-drug campaigners say the study is confirmation of what many long had suspected; there is a direct link bet…

POLICE have seized weapons and drugs in raids on two Melbourne homes. Two men were charged and a third was expected to face charges after the raids in Melbourne's north west yesterday, police said. At Mt Alexander Road in Moonee Ponds, police seized an array of weapons including a home-made spear and a longbow and arrows, a fake gun, stolen property and cannabis. They arrested a 37-year-old man and charged him with trafficking a drug of dependence, possessing a drug of dependence, possessing dangerous articles, handling stolen goods and possessing a pistol. At an address in Cannes Avenue, Avondale Heights, police seized 4kg of high-grade packaged cannabis, marijua…

THE South Australian Government is considering the nation's first mandatory drug-testing regime for its 6500 doctors, after it discovered last month that the state medical board took no action against a mentally ill doctor with a 10-cone-a-day cannabis habit. Health Minister Lea Stevens said the state's chief medical officer would consider the proposal after a coronial inquest found last month that the drug-addicted doctor provided "seriously inadequate care" to a patient who later died. Coroner Wayne Chivell also strongly criticised the South Australian Medical Board's management of the case. The health department review by Chris Baggoley would examine how drug-a…

Amid the whole hue and cry about the AFL and the WADA code, one essential question remains unanswered: why is cannabis, a non-performance-enhancing substance, on the banned list? Dick Pound, the WADA chairman, could do no better than: "Part of the deal in sport is you don't take drugs." Federal Sports Minister Rod Kemp, from many opportunities, has shed even less light on the matter. One journalist who has been critical of the AFL on the issue was asked the question directly on radio. He could merely respond with: "You'd have to ask WADA." We are back where we started. If it were not serious, it would be funny. Sportspeople are being singled out for scrutiny that ne…

SOUTH Australian road safety authorities admit they are "concerned" about what random drug driving tests on Adelaide roads would reveal. The concern comes after figures from Victoria, released last week, showed one in 50 drivers randomly tested were driving while under the influence of drugs. Victorian police are running a year-long random drug testing trial, with 145 of the 7207 drivers tested in the first six months of this year positive for methamphetamines, cannabis, or both. The strike rate of one in 50 compares to one in 250 drivers caught for drink driving by roadside breathalyser tests. Opposition transport spokesman Robert Brokenshire said yesterday he was …

Police have seized white powder and cannabis during raids on an army barracks in Adelaide. Military and South Australian police yesterday raided the Woodside barracks, home of the 16th Air Defence Regiment, the Nine Network reported today. Police tested 41 soldiers for illicit drugs during the raids, the network said. Three soldiers were issued with drug diversion notices requiring them to appear before an assessment panel instead of court, it said. SA Police Superintendent Tom Reinets said military and civilian police had been planning the raids for three weeks. "It was aimed at finding out from both our investigations and theirs (military police) what exactly …

The Victorian Government's peak drug prevention body says heavy cannabis use has become a major concern among young people. A survey of more than 6,000 Victorians between the ages of 16 and 24 found a disturbing trend of heavy cannabis use. Nearly 3 per cent of respondents use the drug daily and up to 5 per cent use it more than once a week. The chairman of the Premiers Drug Prevention Council, Rob Moodie, says heavy use is leading to isolation and depression. "Our levels of cannabis use in Australia are higher than any other English speaking country," he said. Dr Moodie says a new approach is needed. "We just don't seem to be doing very well with it at the mo…

The first person detected allegedly trafficking drugs interstate by a random police drug search introduced three months ago at Sydney's domestic airline terminals has appeared in a Sydney court. Chilong Hoang, a Laotian refugee who came to Australia in 1985, was arrested after 13 kilograms of cannabis were allegedly found in his luggage. Suffering from a skin condition caused by chemical agents used in his former war-torn homeland, Mr Hoang usually survives on a fortnightly pension of $300. But yesterday he was brought before Waverley Local Court, charged with supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis and possession of cannabis. Mascot police, whose plain-clothe…

Western Australia police have charged more than 140 people as part of a state-wide operation targeting drug dealers. Officers working for Operation Python have seized amphetamines, ecstasy, cannabis and heroin during raids on more than 100 homes yesterday and today. Assistant Commissioner Tim Atherton says police also found $34,000 in cash, a Taser stun gun and thousands of dollars worth of stolen property. "A lot of that stolen property is going to mid-level dealers who are exchanging that property for drugs and obviously on-selling it, so they are very significant players and are an issue in terms of the problem of drugs," he said. By July 1, 2005 LAKE Illawarra Police raided a house at Primbee yesterday, seizing almost $350,000 worth of cannabis plants. Detectives and drug squad police were among a dozen officers who descended on the Windang Rd property at noon, finding more than 170 cannabis plants growing in a sophisticated hydroponic set-up, in a specially designed room. Last night police estimated the plants, which varied in size, were worth $348,000. Acting Lake Illawarra Area commander, Acting Superintendent Mark Gallagher, said police had the house under surveillance overnight before the search, and it had been unoccupied the whole time. After an agronomist examined the plants, it…

THE curtains slowly draw back. A powerful spotlight suddenly explodes with light, illuminating a microphone stand in the middle of a bare stage. A tall man runs in from the left, does a little skip and takes the microphone. The applause is instantaneous and loud. "Wow, what an audience," says the man with the mike. "You're electric." He slings his arm around the microphone stand and says: "A funny thing happened on my way here tonight. Fremantle won a football match." And so stand-up comedian Brendon Gale starts his legendary routine. In the front row is Jerry Seinfeld taking notes. He is looking for material for a new show. Dave Hughes is there, too. He is just look…

Courier Mail Chris Griffith 20jun05 Club drugs targeted by police dog squads POLICE dogs will soon be sniffing patrons at Queensland's pubs and clubs as part of a new crackdown on users of heroin, cannabis, cocaine, and amphetamines. Police Minister Judy Spence yesterday confirmed she would prepare legislation to widen police powers to allow dogs to sniff patrons at licensed premises in Queensland. The law will allow officers to take dogs into licensed premises without establishing a belief that drugs are on the premises. Dogs would be capable of detecting not only people carrying drugs but also those who had been in recent contact with them because of odours on …
