One in 50 Victorian drivers tested positive for drug use, according to police, five times the rate of motorists found to be driving drunk. Victoria Police announced that 10,546 drivers had been tested for drug use since new roadside testing was rolled out in December last year. Acting Deputy Commissioner Noel Ashby said 213 drivers had revealed signs of recent methamphetamine or cannabis use, and the high rate of drugged-driving rate was a concern. The rate of motorists caught out by breath tests for alcohol is one in every 250 drivers in Victoria. "Not only is using illicit drugs illegal, but those who use drugs and then get behind the wheel are a real danger…

CRIMINALS are growing 5000ha of marijuana in Australia every year, an area the size of 689 Melbourne Cricket Ground precincts, according to a US intelligence report. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) report, obtained by the Sunday Herald Sun under Freedom of Information, paints a grim picture of illegal drug use in Australia. It says: AUSTRALIA has one of the world's highest rates of ecstasy and methamphetamine abuse. THERE are 200,000 heroin users in Australia. ECSTASY manufacturers are using oil from the sassafras plant to make the drug. COCAINE is being smuggled into Australia on flights from South America, and importation is set to rise, and …

POLICE will be given new powers to use sniffer dogs trained in cocaine and designer-drug detection to randomly search private premises, including parties. Parents who host teenage parties could request police undertake drug spot checks at their venue in a bid to reduce the increasing incidence of violence spilling into suburbs. Police Minister Judy Spence said yesterday the new laws, to be debated in State Parliament this week and likely to be in place for Christmas and the Schoolies festival, were targeted at drug dealers who preyed on youth. Three labradors will be trained to ignore cannabis but detect amphetamines, methamphetamines, cocaine, ecstasy, angel dust…

The NSW Council of Civil Liberties is looking at stamping out ALL sniffer dogs in NSW :thumbsup Apparently 70-80% of positive detections end without a single bit of evidence of drugs at all so the sniffer dogs are basically useless The council says its police harrassment to have a sniffer dog smell you up and down, expecially considering 70-80% of all positive results given by the dogs are false postives.... The police are whinging (as to be expected) demanding that the dogs stay on as they play a valuable role in the war on drugs and stamping them out will open the way for dealers and traffickers.... I'm not sure if they meant all public sniffer dogs like at…

DNA research uncovers new cannabis strain Researchers in the ACT appear to have found a previously unidentified type of cannabis plant which they have dubbed 'rasta'. There are currently thought to be only two types of cannabis, one prized for its rope-making qualities, the other cultivated for its drug properties. New Scientist reports that Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) scientists categorised almost 200 cannabis plants according to their DNA. CIT spokesman Simon Gilmore says he and colleagues at the institute's Centre for Forensic Science appear to have uncovered another sub-species of the plant. 'Rasta' is not dissimilar to the sativa sub-species but …

DRUG gangs are gutting suburban houses and building massive rural sheds to grow their marijuana as the hide-and-seek battle with police intensifies. Improved aerial surveillance has forced growers to abandon massive outdoor crops and move indoors where they are using sophisticated hydroponic techniques to grow super-strength cannabis. Police say gangs are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on properties and equipment. In some cases, interior walls of homes as well as furniture and fittings are being removed to maximise the growing area under special intense lighting and temperature controls. Cannabis ... no effect on pain, according to a new ruling /supplied CANNABIS has no role in the treatment of acute pain, contrary to popular belief, according to Australian guidelines designed to improve doctors' and patients' "abysmal" knowledge of pain relief options. Although many experts believe cannabis may help relieve chronic (or long-term) pain, the guidelines launched in Sydney yesterday by federal Health Minister Tony Abbott say solid evidence now shows it has little efficacy with acute pain. Acute pain is defined as pain lasting up to two to three weeks after surgery, trauma or a medical condition such as kidney stones. The previous edition of the guidelin…
