WA students as young as 12 are peddling drugs to classmates. The problem has become so common that principals are asking police to use sniffer dogs to check children for cannabis and amphetamines. The Sunday Times also can reveal that senior WA police are meeting monthly with teachers and principals in Perth and country towns to try to combat the drug scourge. Supt David Parkinson said parents and politicians would be naive to think drugs were not in public, private and Catholic schools throughout WA. He said police had made the disturbing discovery that some parents were supplying drugs to their children and ordering them to sell the illicit substances to classma…

A meeting of Australia's top policy-making body on drugs today will discuss the creation of three national strategies to tackle alcohol abuse, and substance abuse, including cannabis and petrol sniffing. The Ministerial Council on Drug Strategy is holding its annual conference in Perth. The council comprises the federal, state and territory health ministers, and justice and police ministers. The ABC has been told the conference is likely to endorse a national strategy on cannabis use, covering prevention, treatment, and law enforcement. However it is understood the national plan does not seek to over-ride state laws on cannabis. The state and federal ministers w…

A survey of the Northern Territory's drug users shows most have driven while drunk or under the influence of illicit drugs. The survey by the Drug and Alcohol Research council pays people $30 to talk about their drug use, as well as a substance's availability, quality and price. The 2005 results show ecstasy is becoming more popular and is considered easy to get. The results also show users are increasingly combining the party drug with large quantities of alcohol. The majority of those surveyed said in the past six months they had driven while over the alcohol limit and within an hour of taking illicit drugs, usually cannabis or ecstasy. The survey has also fou…

A South Australian woman who smoked cannabis before a crash which killed her teenage friend has been fined and banned from driving for six months. Kay Ellen Colman, 22, had smoked four "cones" of cannabis before she rolled her car near Wilmington in the state's mid-north in November 2003. Her 14-year old passenger was killed. Ms Colman was this week found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, but guilty of the lesser charge of driving without due care. District Court judge Michael Boylan sentenced Colman on the basis that her driving was not impaired by the cannabis. He added that smoking it before taking the wheel was an act of "gross selfishness." …

Police raid hippie festival From: The Sunday Mail (Qld) By Paul Weston May 07, 2006 POLICE swarmed into the northern NSW hippie town of Nimbin yesterday in the biggest crackdown yet on illegal drug use at its annual Mardi Grass. Police set up road blocks to stop and search vehicles driving into the township, about 60km south of Murwillumbah, as more than 10,000 people flocked to the festival. Police on horseback patrolled the main streets and officers dressed in paramilitary gear and armed with guns inspected venues including the Nimbin museum, which vibrantly promotes marijuana use with its colourful Kombis inside. Some residents were furious when police threaten…

For a while there it seemed as though the latest anti-cannabis campaign driven by John Howard and Morris Iemma was dying down but now it's back and meaner than ever. And, I used to think that channel Ten was a little less anti-cannabis than Nine and Seven but that illusion has been shattered. They joined the anti-cannabis crusade in a big way last night by portraying cannabis as a drug which will ravage users and make them deranged out-of-control murderers. On the 5th of May, 2006, Ten's late news had two negative stories on cannabis. Here is the summary: The broadcast starts at approx 11.55pm and the third headline is: "...and how cannabis is driving Australia '…

A MAN who bludgeoned his own mother to death because he could not bear the thought of becoming her full-time carer led a secret life of shame and violence as a cross-dressing armed robber. Bizarre details of father-of-three Phillip Parkes' life were revealed yesterday when he was jailed for at least 13 years for the murder of ailing Grace Parkes, 83. Parkes, 49, pleaded guilty in November to the crime, committed in January last year, but faced the Supreme Court for sentencing submissions yesterday. The hearing was told he had previously been convicted of armed robberies, carried out while dressed in women's clothes with an unloaded firearm. This, a psychiatrist to…
