Police target shoppers in drug blitz Tanya Westthorp | 12:01am May 19, 2012 SHOPPERS are being targeted by Tweed police as part of a new range of operations to rid the region of its drug problem. Since the start of the year, plain-clothed police have been randomly targeting drug dealing hot spots, including bus shelters and major shopping centres, with the help of a drug detection dog. Police have charged more than 50 people with drug possession and searched hundreds more -- many of whom told police they had used drugs that day. On Thursday, dozens of shoppers were searched after police dog Doug picked up the smell of cannabis. Police officers then swooped …

http://www.dailytele...i-1226284438235 OUTDOOR cannabis cultivation is becoming high-tech as criminals use hydroponic methods to boost yields for the cash crop. Criminals are now growing the crops in smaller numbers and are scattering them across the state's forests to reduce detection, compared to a decade ago when they were grown in the thousands. The new methods are not outsmarting the NSW Drug Squad, who are using local police intelligence and helicopters to locate million of dollars of illegal plants hidden in steep terrain across the state. The cannabis eradication team set out this week to remote locations west and north of Coffs Harbour as part of its annual …

The stunt was was slammed as cheap and immature by the Family Council of Victoria. A landowner didn't notice cannabis plants growing on his north-western NSW property for at least six months. Officers from Castlereagh Local Area Command visited the rural property of 25,000 hectares at Lightning Ridge shortly after 11am (AEST) on Thursday. When they arrived, the owner told police he had found a marijuana crop on an isolated section of his land. "It's a very vast expanse of land and it's heavily watered with pine trees and the crop was in amongst the pine trees," Detective inspector Scott Russell told AAP. "It was a well set-up, elaborate system. "It's been there for some time, possibly up to six months. Police seized and destroyed a total 136 plants, wit…

The NSW Greens have called for the legalisation of medical cannabis, while NSW Police have raided the only producer of a cannabis-derived health product in Australia. Greens MLC David Shoebridge made the call at a recent rally in Martin Place. “If a doctor believes that the prescription of cannabis is the best, sometimes even the only, way of dealing with your chronic pain, why do we prohibit that and make it unlawful here in NSW?” Greens MLC John Kaye told the Star Observer he would move a motion during Parliament’s spring sitting which would outline a plan for a one-year medical marijuana trial under which GPs and treating specialists would be able to prescribe medical …

Posted March 29, 2012 14:51:12 Workers at a New South Wales energy company will no longer have to give urine sample for drug tests, after a ruling by Fair Work Australia. The arbitrator has ruled in favour of trade unions, which had argued the state-owned Endeavour Energy should use oral swabs for testing instead. Scott McNamara, from the United Services Union, says Fair Work Australia found urine testing was invasive and unjust. "The tribunal took a view that drug testing is not for social monitoring. Drug testing is to seek if you are fit for work, and that gets down to workplace safety," he said. "What people do on the weekend does not necessarily have a bearing o…
