From: The Australian December 08, 2011 Oldie but interesting. CANNABIS snacks were given the go-ahead by the nation's food regulator yesterday. Food Standards Australia overrode objections from police and health officials that the "marijuana munchies" could interfere with drug tests. It said yesterday it planned to amend the Food Standards Code to permit the used of processed hemp seeds - a rich source of omega fatty acids - to be used as an ingredient in foods ranging from ice cream to cheeses, salad dressings and muesli bars. Likening hemp to poppy seeds, Food Standards chief executive Steve McCutcheon said it was safe to eat, and already used in a range of foo…

A MAN who grew one of Australia's largest cannabis crops so he could fund a nationwide anti-abortion protest has told a court he has no regrets. Michael Bennett Gardner Snr, 58, told the Supreme Court in Brisbane today that he wished he had grown at least another 15 acres of the drug before he was caught in mid-2008. He then took the unusual step of urging the judge to jail him for the maximum of 20 years for the charge of trafficking, to which he pleaded guilty, saying his crime was "the top level of offending". However, Justice Roslyn Atkinson, who described the offending as "evil", agreed with the prosecution that Gardner should be sentenced to 13 years' jail. …

May 22, 2012 MORE than half of Australians support reduced legal penalties for use of drugs such as cannabis and ecstasy, an analysis of a federal government survey shows. The findings contrast with the Herald/Nielsen poll released yesterday, which showed that two-thirds of people opposed decriminalisation. But that is explained by the different way the poll questions were structured, said Alison Ritter, who heads a drug policy modelling program at the national drug and alcohol research centre at the University of NSW. She said it reflected the different responses likely when people were asked about specific approaches rather than the broader decriminalisation que…

The State Opposition and the Greens have lashed out at the Government's new drug awareness campaign targeting teenage cannabis users. Yesterday, the Government launched the, 'Swap for Pot' message to target 15 to 19 year old cannabis users as a part of the Drug Aware Campaign. The Mental Health Minister Helen Morton encouraged users to "smash their bong". However, the manager of Opposition Business Michelle Roberts doubts the new campaign will decrease the use of drugs. "This campaign is bordering on farcical and trivial. It is too little too late. I don't think it will be effective with young people, I expect most people will make a joke of it," she said. "Probably j…

Mark Metherell, Lisa Davies May 21, 2012 AUSTRALIANS remain firmly against relaxing illicit drug laws despite declarations by a group of eminent Australians and a global commission that the war on drugs has failed. A Herald/Nielsen poll has found two-thirds of Australians oppose decriminalisation. The finding shows little change in attitudes from a similar poll taken 13 years ago. The latest poll finds 27 per cent of voters support decriminalisation, although that figure rises to 50 per cent of Greens and 34 per cent of Labor voters. Support among Liberal and National party voters is much lower, at 18 per cent. Attitudes on the issue appear to be entrenched, wit…

Photo: reuters IT IS the drug of choice across the country and claims the largest share of the illicit drug market globally. But new figures have painted an even more alarming picture of Australia's marijuana trade, with authorities making a record number of cannabis seizures at the Australian border last year. According to the Australian Crime Commission's Illicit Drug Data Report 2010-11, the number of border detections increase…

Police target shoppers in drug blitz Tanya Westthorp | 12:01am May 19, 2012 SHOPPERS are being targeted by Tweed police as part of a new range of operations to rid the region of its drug problem. Since the start of the year, plain-clothed police have been randomly targeting drug dealing hot spots, including bus shelters and major shopping centres, with the help of a drug detection dog. Police have charged more than 50 people with drug possession and searched hundreds more -- many of whom told police they had used drugs that day. On Thursday, dozens of shoppers were searched after police dog Doug picked up the smell of cannabis. Police officers then swooped …
