Three Victorian detectives and a former detective today faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on charges of trafficking cannabis worth at least $100,000. Witness Daniel May told the court he had arranged to deliver the cannabis to another man in exchange for $100,000 at the St Kilda Marina on Melbourne's foreshore on May 10, 1999. But the drug deal went sour when two police ca…

The survey, an Australian first, was conducted by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. Participants reported cannabis was useful in preventing side effects caused by conventional medicines. The most common medical conditions the cannabis users suffered were arthritis, chronic pain, depression, nausea, muscle spasms and weight loss. More than 70 per cent were concerned about marijuana's illegality and 54 per cent were scared of being arrested, but were willing to take the risk for the benefits …

I Tried Marijuana - but Didn't Inhale The Health Minister, Tony Abbott, says he smoked marijuana as a student but that, like former US president Bill Clinton, he did not inhale. Mr Abbott's revelation comes a day after the Labor leader, Mark Latham, told reporters he had used cannabis in his youth. Mr Abbott told Channel Seven this morning: "I had a puff on a marijuana cigarette when I was a student." But unlike Mr Latham, who says he inhaled the cigarette smoke, Mr Abbott said he did not inhale. "I don't inhale normal cigarettes let alone illegal cigarettes ... I'm afraid in this matter Bill Clinton and I have something in common." In a 1992 interview w…

Cannabis plants growing in palace park AFP September 09, 2004 OSLO: A number of cannabis plants have been found, and destroyed, in the park surrounding the Norwegian royal palace which is home to King Harald and Queen Sonja, official sources said on Wednesday. "There were some hash plants. We have no idea who might have put them there," palace spokeswoman Wenche Rasch told AFP. The palace said it was still unknown whether the illegal growths had simply been planted as decorative greenery or if they had been snuck in and planted by an outsider. The city of Oslo is responsible for looking after the relatively small park in the centre of the capital. The plants were …

The Government’s Criminal Code (Serious Drugs Offences) Amendment Bill 2004 although aimed at drug traffickers and serious drug offences, widens the net and imposes draconian penalties on young people experimenting in or addicted to drugs. Families and Friends for Drug Law Reform calls for the Bill to be withdrawn for reconsideration. “The Bill is not just confined to serious drug offences,” said Brian McConnell, President of Families and Friends for Drug Law Reform, “Events that in plain language would not be regarded as ‘serious crimes’ will be labeled as such with severe penalties” “For example a teenager at a dance party who resells to a friend a single ecstasy t…

Marijuana Party president Marc Emery has been sentenced to three months in jail in Saskatchewan for drug trafficking. Emery had pleaded guilty to passing one marijuana joint to someone else in a downtown Saskatoon park back in March. He has 10 previous marijuana-related offences on his record. Many are for trafficking in connection with his marijuana seed business. But in the past, Emery has only be fined. Provincial Court Judge Albert Lavoie said he is sending Emery to jail to send a message. The judge said Emery's crime was clearly a political act – but said Emery had flaunted the law, and there was a need for a stronger deterrent. Emery's lawyer, Lianne Johnson, sa…

There is no scientific proof that cannabis use induces schizophrenia, Dutch scientists say, questioning recent research and an argument the Dutch government uses to crack down on marijuana-selling "coffee shops." In an article in this week's Magazine for Psychiatry, a peer-reviewed journal, the three authors say that on the basis of currently available data "there is no justification for the proposed closure of coffee shops." Often the first symptoms of schizophrenia occur during adolescence, when people start to experiment with drugs, but the scientists believe cannabis use only has a negative effect on people already genetically predisposed to the mental illness. …

High-Tech Pot Bust Becomes Political Issue Wednesday, June 16, 2004 Two Swiss pot smokers thought they could puff away undisturbed in a parked car — but they weren't counting on the military surveillance drone flying overhead. The soldiers testing the pilotless plane via remote control near the city of Lucerne (search) called police when they spotted the pair, reports the Le Matin Dimanche newspaper. Cop cars soon drove up, sirens screaming, and arrested the puffers in mid-joint. The whole thing would have ended there had not Boris Banga (search), a socialist member of the Swiss parliament, complained to fellow lawmakers that the incident in late May was an in…
