The ACT Government will mount a public education campaign to promote changes to Canberra's drug laws. Under laws passed by the Legislative Assembly last week, maximum sentences will rise to 25 years for growing or supplying commercial amounts of drugs. The main change is that the number of cannabis plants which attract an infringement notice will drop from five to two. Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says he is aware of the need to inform the community. "I will be seeking and will receive assurances that we do engage as broad as possible an information and education campaign in relation to the new regime in relation to the personal use cannabis," he said. In December, the U.S. Supreme Court will answer,"Can the government prosecute sick people who grow marijuana and it on the advice of a doctor?" This should be an easy answer....NO The U.S Supreme Court is finally going to put a leash on asscroft....I mean Ashcroft when it comes to medical marijuana. If their vote is like mine. I think it morbid that Ashcroft wastes his time by trying to people in prison when they trying to relieve their pain. The last time I looked, Bin Laden and his group were still free, and there are violent crimes that Ashcroft can work on. According to the Mail Tribune," The case of John Ashcroft vs. Angel Raich may determine the fate of the …

Three Victorian detectives and a former detective today faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on charges of trafficking cannabis worth at least $100,000. Witness Daniel May told the court he had arranged to deliver the cannabis to another man in exchange for $100,000 at the St Kilda Marina on Melbourne's foreshore on May 10, 1999. But the drug deal went sour when two police ca…

Nearly two-thirds of people using marijuana for medical reasons had decreased or stopped taking other medications early, results of a State Government survey show. The survey, an Australian first, was conducted by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. Participants reported cannabis was useful in preventing side effects caused by conventional medicines. The most common medical conditions the cannabis users suffered were arthritis, chronic pain, depression, nausea, muscle spasms and weight loss. More than 70 per cent were concerned about marijuana's illegality and 54 per cent were scared of being arrested, but were willing to take the risk for the benefits …

I Tried Marijuana - but Didn't Inhale The Health Minister, Tony Abbott, says he smoked marijuana as a student but that, like former US president Bill Clinton, he did not inhale. Mr Abbott's revelation comes a day after the Labor leader, Mark Latham, told reporters he had used cannabis in his youth. Mr Abbott told Channel Seven this morning: "I had a puff on a marijuana cigarette when I was a student." But unlike Mr Latham, who says he inhaled the cigarette smoke, Mr Abbott said he did not inhale. "I don't inhale normal cigarettes let alone illegal cigarettes ... I'm afraid in this matter Bill Clinton and I have something in common." In a 1992 interview w…

Cannabis plants growing in palace park AFP September 09, 2004 OSLO: A number of cannabis plants have been found, and destroyed, in the park surrounding the Norwegian royal palace which is home to King Harald and Queen Sonja, official sources said on Wednesday. "There were some hash plants. We have no idea who might have put them there," palace spokeswoman Wenche Rasch told AFP. The palace said it was still unknown whether the illegal growths had simply been planted as decorative greenery or if they had been snuck in and planted by an outsider. The city of Oslo is responsible for looking after the relatively small park in the centre of the capital. The plants were …

The Government’s Criminal Code (Serious Drugs Offences) Amendment Bill 2004 although aimed at drug traffickers and serious drug offences, widens the net and imposes draconian penalties on young people experimenting in or addicted to drugs. Families and Friends for Drug Law Reform calls for the Bill to be withdrawn for reconsideration. “The Bill is not just confined to serious drug offences,” said Brian McConnell, President of Families and Friends for Drug Law Reform, “Events that in plain language would not be regarded as ‘serious crimes’ will be labeled as such with severe penalties” “For example a teenager at a dance party who resells to a friend a single ecstasy t…
