The State Government has announced a 12-month trial of road-side testing for ecstasy, speed and cannabis starting next year. The mobile technology for road-side drug testing has been a long time coming. But now no less than four companies will be competing for the Government contract. Roads Minister Carl Scully says the trial will target heavy vehicle drivers using uppers and downers. “Police will conduct on the spot saliva tests with portable drug scanning machines. New research has revealed more evidence of a link between cannabis use and schizophrenia. A national conference beginning in Melbourne today will examine international studies about the issue. Professor David Castle from the University of Melbourne says there is already evidence showing some cannabis users can become psychotic. One in five parents back cannabis use Almost one in five parents approves of their children experimenting with cannabis, according to a review of the Federal Government's $25 million anti-drugs campaign last year. The review also found that adults without school-age children were more prepared to condone youth cannabis use, provided it did not prompt experimentation with harder drugs. It also suggested that parents tended to overestimate the accessibility of illicit drugs to school-age children but underestimate their willingness to try them if available. The ACT Government will mount a public education campaign to promote changes to Canberra's drug laws. Under laws passed by the Legislative Assembly last week, maximum sentences will rise to 25 years for growing or supplying commercial amounts of drugs. The main change is that the number of cannabis plants which attract an infringement notice will drop from five to two. Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says he is aware of the need to inform the community.
