DRIVERS high on speed or cannabis are more than twice as likely to be found on the nation's roads compared to drink-drivers. That's the preliminary finding of the world's first random roadside drug-driving test being trialled in Victoria. And under current laws in Victoria, those drivers won't be forced off the road. The first six weeks of the year-long pilot program found that one in every 103 motorists were driving with either methamphetamines and/or THC in their system, the active components in speed and marijuana respectively. This compares with an average of one in 250 drivers found to be drink-driving - that is, with a blood alcohol level of 0.05 per cent or m…

ACT rise in organised crime linked to drug trade, says Quinlan The recent growth of organised crime in the ACT was linked largely to the hydroponic marijuana trade, acting Police Minister Ted Quinlan said yesterday. Concerns about the emergence of organised crime in the territory were revealed in a recent ACT Government submission to a Productivity Commission report on government services. "Increasingly sophisticated criminal networks have been detected in the ACT some of which have clear links to larger scale operations in other Australian and international jurisdictions," it said. Mr Quinlan said a large proportion of the rise in organised crime was linked to can…

Indonesian police have arrested a Peruvian-born West Australian man for allegedly dealing drugs in Bali. Arevalo Stagnarro Alberto, 32, was caught with 330 grams of imported and local marijuana, as well as 0.9 grams of hashish on January 18. The drugs were apparently smuggled into Bali in 8 small packages inside a Happy New Year card from Australia, Bali police narcotics division chief Bambang Sugiarto told AAP. "He lives in Australia," he said. "He will be charged under narcotics laws." If convicted he could face up to 12 years in jail. Lawyers for a Gold Coast student facing death in Bali on drugs charges have accused the Australian government of forsaking their client. "We have lost all faith in the AFP (Australian Federal Police) and the Australian foreign ministry," Vasudeva Rasiah, a member of Schapelle Corby's legal team, said today. "They promised us they would help, but it was lip service all the way. "They have done nothing and now what do we have in her defence? Absolutely nothing." Corby, 27, of Tugun, faces the death penalty under Indonesia's tough anti-drugs laws after customs officers found a plastic zip-lock bag containing 4.2 kilograms of cannabis leaf and heads in her bodyboard b…

A rally will be held this afternoon in Nimbin, in northern NSW, protesting against what some people say is a new wave of police harassment. The rally has been organised by the Hemp Embassy, which wants cannabis legalised. The police presence in Nimbin has strengthened and recently two tourist buses were pulled over and searched by a sniffer dog, and cannabis cautions were given to overseas tourists. Hemp spokesman Michael Balderstone says he wants better communication between the police and the community. "There's so much frustration in town and there's so much...injustice people feel because of the way we're harassed because we're cannabis users, so at least it g…

A "sophisticated" drugs factory containing hundreds of cannabis plants with a street value of up to £100,000 has been found at a north Shropshire farm. Detectives discovered the crop of nearly 400 plants being cultivated in a disused pig shed yesterday. They believe the building, between Whitchurch and Market Drayton, had been rented out by a local farmer to two men from the north-west of England. The farmer has been spoken to on suspicion of being concerned with the production of cannabis and inquiries are continuing to find the people who grew the plants. Detective Constable Rob McNamara said today: "The building was full of neat rows of cannabis plants abou…
