SEIZURES of hydroponically grown cannabis in the Adelaide's Elizabeth area are running at record levels. So far this financial year, 182 offences have been recorded, compared to 152 for the corresponding period last year. Detections peaked in February with 29 offences recorded – a 61 per cent increase over the January figure of 18. Elizabeth CIB acting Chief Inspector John Venditto said yesterday the large increase in detections was a result of a focus on drug distribution in the area. The increased use of accurate intelligence on drug manufacturing and dedicated operations to tackle them were key components of the police action. "SA police operate with effective …

TWO men have been arrested for growing cannabis after Victorian police recovering stolen goods from the property next door noticed their crop. Police had gone to a house on Old Cap Schanck Road in Rosebud, south of Melbourne yesterday to look for a stolen caravan and boat. They found what they were looking for and arrested several people and then one of the officers noticed several plastic hot houses next door full of large cannabis plants. When police went next door they found the hot houses contained mature cannabis plants more than two metres tall believed to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. A 54-year-old Rosebud man and a 54-year-old Mulgrave man wer…

Police have used a helicopter to remove a well-established cannabis plantation from the Kanangra Boyd National Park near Oberon in central western NSW. Officers uprooted the 152 plants from the park late yesterday after getting a tip-off from a member of the public. Chifley duty officer Inspector Chris Davey says the plants had an estimated street value of more than $300,000 and ranged from half a metre to two-and-a-half metres in height. Inspector Davey says a camouflaged tent and a water pump were also found. "Because of the steep terrain we required a police helicopter, Pol Air Three, to come in and lift the cannabis, the property out of the area because it was…

Police have been told to back off from harassing tourists and drug users at Nimbin in northern NSW. A rally, organised by the Hemp Embassy, was held yesterday to protest against what some say is a new wave of police harassment. Police have strengthened their presence in the town, and a special operation included searching overseas visitors on tourist buses for drugs. Hemp spokesman Michael Balderstone says there needs to be better communication between the police and the community. He says most police want cannabis legalised and do not want to waste time arresting people who are stoned. "What they're doing is making no impact at all and I think everyone agrees t…

Translation: Nol van Schaik. Leers wants to tolerate growing weed too!! Maastricht. Mayor Leers of Maastricht wants to tolerate the production and supply of softdrugs. That should decrease criminality. At present cannabis can be sold from coffeeshops, but production and supply of the shops is forbidden. According to Leers this stimulates criminal activities. Tolerating the production must come with serious check-ups on quantities and quality of the drugs. This can only take place if the neighboring cities in Belgium and Germany cooperate in this culture of tolerance. Source: Teletext NOS, Dutch News Broadcaster. So much for those who announce the end of the Dut…

Hello together, Since the first of February this year, Belgium has updated their cannabis laws. They already did so in May 2003, yet because of severe shortcomings the court overruled those changes in October 2004. Therefore those laws were being revised and now accepted. Generally, it is to be pointed out that Belgians who are caught with less than 3g are allowed to keep their dope and do not have to fear a sue as the police is demanded to set different priorities. Same applies if you are caught with one plant. However this law does not apply for foreigners or minors, yet it is a sign that changes have to be done. Unfortunately this law originally aimed to decri…

Two and a half tonnes of cannabis has been sent to Federal Parliament in a bid to educate politicians about the difference between industrial hemp and marijuana. Philip Warner from Queensland's Ecofibre Industries Limited says too many politicians do not know that industrial hemp is useless as a drug. He says each politician has been sent a 15 kilogram bag of hemp mulch in an effort to change their thinking. "Every time we write to the Federal Government they keep throwing back in our face this thing about hemp being associated with marijuana," he said. "They are not at all assisting in being able to develop a new industry for global consumption. "Our concern i…
