New South Wales police have discovered cannabis with an estimated street value of $1.25 million at a house at Albion Park Rail, south of Wollongong. Police say they were called to the house on the Princes Highway about 9:45pm (AEST) after reports of a fire. They say the fire was put out and about 500 cannabis plants were found throughout the house in a hydroponic set-up. Police say the fire is believed to have originated from an electricity meterbox which had been illegally modified. Author:ABC Date:Tuesday, May 31, 2005. Source:ABC Copyright:© 2005 ABC

The NSW Government has released details about a new cannabis treatment clinic to be opened in Orange within months. The centre will service 200 face-to-face clients every year. The Government expects that most of the people accessing the centre will be heavy, problematic cannabis users, but there will also be programs for parents whose young children use the drug. The Special Minister of State, John Della Bosca, says the community will be consulted before a venue for the clinic is finalised. "The treatment centre is likely to be operating prior to July this year, so in the...next couple of months the centre should be fully operational," he said. Mr Della Bosca s…

ANOTHER Australian has been arrested with drugs in Bali, following in the footsteps of the Bali Nine and Schapelle Corby and prompting denials from Balinese police that Australians have been targeted. John Julian Pyle, a 42-year-old South Australian, was arrested in his bungalow in the expatriates' enclave of Sayan, near Ubud, north of Bali's capital, Denpasar. Police raided Mr Pyle's home before dawn on Sunday morning, and allegedly found 1.8g of hashish kept in a plastic bag, a small bottle and a condom box. Police say the web designer has admitted his guilt and faces up to 10 years in prison, and a fine of 500,000,000 rupiah ($68,122). Mr Pyle told The Australian…

The legal downgrading of cannabis should not be reversed, Britain's most senior policeman said yesterday. Sir Ian Blair, the Comissioner of the Metropolitan Police, added that if the Government re-classified cannabis from a class C to a class B drug - reversing the change made last year - his force would "lobby fiercely" for the offence to be dealt with by the issuing of fixed penalty notices, rather than arrests and prosecutions. Sir Ian Blair, Comissioner of the Metropolitan Police His comments come after the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, indicated that the Government may be having second thoughts about the downgrading of cannabis, one of t…

The Nimbin Hemp Embassy organisers of the annual MardiGrass Cannabis Law Reform weekend say it was probably the biggest crowd ever though nobody was counting! "The rubbish skips were all full by Sunday morning which has never happened before and that's a fair indication." Schapelle Corby's influence was everywhere over the weekend, yellow ribbons, theatre in the rally, banners, and quite possibly one of the reasons for such a big turnout in the rally. "She and the Bali nine have certainly put the war on drugs back on the agenda and I have no doubt the majority of Australians are ready for cannabis law reform. It's no big deal, especially for the new generations who are …

Now, when you hear David describing his research and you hear Chris talking about the people turning up in his practice with psychosis and with problems from marijuana, does that shift your view at all about the issue of decriminalisation, for exam…

United Kingsom -- Drug experts will begin debating today whether stronger "skunk" varieties of cannabis should carry higher penalties for possession. The Advisory Council for the Misuse of Drugs, which meets in London, has been asked by the home secretary, Charles Clarke, for its advice on varieties of cannabis containing high levels of THC, the active ingredient. In his letter to the committee, Mr Clarke pointed it to these forms of the plant, known as skunk, which are often grown in nutrient-rich water. "I am aware the Dutch government are taking a particular interest in very high strength strains and are considering whether cannabis above a certain strength shoul…

Assertions that our nation's drug policy minimizes cocaine and heroin while focusing on marijuana are misleading. The fallacy involves interpreting drug arrests as signals of changed drug policy, rather than as indicators of drug use. As drug use went down during the 1980s, arrests fell accordingly. When drug use climbed between 1992 and 1997, arrests followed suit. And when the cocaine epidemic struck, cocaine arrests rose steeply, only to drop as the epidemic waned. The common sense conclusion is that drug use rates and criminal justice responses are linked. Thus, the key to reducing drug arrests is reducing drug use. Important progress has already occurred - youth dr…
