A MAN who grew cannabis worth millions of dollars on a property called Hippy Valley in central-western New South Wales has had his jail sentence more than doubled. Blaz Skorin, known also as Bill, was sentenced in March to two years and two months' jail for the cultivation of almost 7000 cannabis plants on a property he co-owned near Forbes. Skorin, 31, had pleaded guilty in the District Court to growing plantations, estimated to be worth millions of dollars, from June 2002 and March 2003. Today, following an appeal by the prosecutors, his jail term was increased to four and a half years by a panel of three judges in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. His pre…

This week Ukiah residents will notice a definite increase in helicopter traffic overhead. Nine helicopters, ranging from small Bell Jet Rangers to a National Guard Black Hawk from Moffett Field in the Bay Area, are taking part in a week-long Aerial Observation School being held at the Ukiah Airport as part of the ongoing marijuana suppression effort. The school is funded by the Drug Enforcement Agency whose larger goal is to eradicate cannabis growing nationwide. The Mendocino County Sheriff's Department plays an instrumental role, using its local expertise by hosting the training session for other law enforcement agencies. It all happens under the watchful eye of Sergea…

MORRIS IEMMA, medical cannabis draft exposure bill A bit over two years ago, (May 20, 2003 to be exact), Bob Carr, illustrious leader of the state of NSW for over ten years, stated on parliamentary record the following: "The complexity of an issue does not provide a licence to walk away while ordinary people suffer and acquire criminal records, simply for treating their illness and relieving their suffering in the only way that works for them. With a sensible mixture of common sense and compassion we can make a medical cannabis regime work in this state, as it works in other jurisdictions around the world. That is the governments intention and I look forward to introducin…

The Bath University team found people with the gut disorder had an abundant number of a type of cannabinoid receptors in their body. They believe this is part of the body's attempt to dampen down the inflammation and that giving a drug that binds to these receptors could boost this. Their findings appear in the journal Gastroenterology. Cannabinoids When people have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis - colle…

Officer's home raided in corruption probe July 29, 2005 - 12:05PM A policeman's home was raided yesterday as part of an investigation into police corruption. Victoria Police spokeswoman Creina O'Grady said the officer's home was searched because of a suspected drugs link. "It's an ongoing investigation and there's been no charges,'' she said. Sergeant O'Grady said the raid was part of an ethical standards department investigation. It was not connected to the Operation Rakus raids yesterday, in which more than 100 police carried out pre-dawn raids on 16 properties across Melbourne. "It was separate to the other raids,'' she said. Detective Acting Superintende…

SOUTH Australian road safety authorities admit they are "concerned" about what random drug driving tests on Adelaide roads would reveal. The concern comes after figures from Victoria, released last week, showed one in 50 drivers randomly tested were driving while under the influence of drugs. Victorian police are running a year-long random drug testing trial, with 145 of the 7207 drivers tested in the first six months of this year positive for methamphetamines, cannabis, or both. The strike rate of one in 50 compares to one in 250 drivers caught for drink driving by roadside breathalyser tests. Opposition transport spokesman Robert Brokenshire said yesterday he was …

Media Release 20.07.2005 Green light for cannabis but not tobacco. MP Nandor Tanczos’ Misuse of Drugs (Cannabis Infringement) Amendment Bill, if passed through parliament, will be the first step in the Green Party’s push to have cannabis legalised. The Green Party is calling for partial decriminalisation of cannabis. This comes from an avid supporter of the Smokefree Environments Amendment Act that outlawed smoking in bars. Tanczos, on national television, admitted to being a once a month cannabis user, an admission of possession of cannabis, an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975. One questions whether Tanczos is a fit and proper person to be in parliamen…

THE South Australian Government is considering the nation's first mandatory drug-testing regime for its 6500 doctors, after it discovered last month that the state medical board took no action against a mentally ill doctor with a 10-cone-a-day cannabis habit. Health Minister Lea Stevens said the state's chief medical officer would consider the proposal after a coronial inquest found last month that the drug-addicted doctor provided "seriously inadequate care" to a patient who later died. Coroner Wayne Chivell also strongly criticised the South Australian Medical Board's management of the case. The health department review by Chris Baggoley would examine how drug-a…

Amid the whole hue and cry about the AFL and the WADA code, one essential question remains unanswered: why is cannabis, a non-performance-enhancing substance, on the banned list? Dick Pound, the WADA chairman, could do no better than: "Part of the deal in sport is you don't take drugs." Federal Sports Minister Rod Kemp, from many opportunities, has shed even less light on the matter. One journalist who has been critical of the AFL on the issue was asked the question directly on radio. He could merely respond with: "You'd have to ask WADA." We are back where we started. If it were not serious, it would be funny. Sportspeople are being singled out for scrutiny that ne…
