Forget reefer madness - now we are an enviromental scourge!! Wasted: dope smokers in sin bin over contaminated recycling By Wendy Frew Environment Reporter November 8, 2005 Australia's marijuana smokers have created an unexpected problem for the country's recycling efforts: home-made bongs thrown into domestic recycling bins are contaminating material that could otherwise be reused. Just one bong, or water pipe, could stop hundreds or even thousands of PET plastic bottles from being recycled because a bong's PVC hose would contaminate the material, says environmental campaigner Planet Ark. "Bongs are a big problem for recyclers," said Planet Ark's founder, John De…

A northern NSW organisation that wants marijuana legalised says long-term users are more likely to drive more safely while under the influence than if they are forced to go without the drug. A new study has revealed many cannabis users often drive after using the drug, which increases the risk of crashes. It also revealed the only deterrent to driving stoned was police roadside testing. But Michael Balderstone from the Nimbin Hemp Embassy says it was hard to test the responses of drivers because cannabis affects people differently. "I don't know what to think about it and it hasn't come near us yet," he said. "If they put saliva testing outside Nimbin we'd all b…

Sydney - It's well known that smoking cannabis makes you hungry. What wasn't so well known is why this is so. In a breakthrough that may help in stimulating the appetite of anorexics, or blunting the hunger pains of dieters, Australian researchers have found the receptors in the brain that make marijuana users ravenous. "Because smoking cannabis increases appetite, it was believed that this was somehow related to the effects of cannabis on some brain centre," University of New England researcher Paul Mallet said. "But that was until now not identified." "We've actually identified which part of the brain is responsible for THC's effect on the stimulation of app…

A national drug summit in Adelaide has been told of a radical proposal to address addiction before it takes hold in teenagers. Perth doctor George O'Neil suggests that high schools should test students for marijuana use as part of an annual health check and if they fail, they would be forced to undergo monthly tests. Dr O'Neil says several mining companies use a similar model on their employees. "The only punishment a school could ever give is to change from annual monitoring to monthly monitoring on the kids that were starting to be affected," Dr O'Neil said. "But if you're being monitored once a month and you have to discuss this with your mum once a month, th…
