SMOKING marijuana drove Timothy Kosowicz mad and he strangled an angelic little girl - but a judge blames the failings of our society. A court heard yesterday that Kosowicz, 23, had used the drug since he was 12 and for the past five years was in and out of hospital with "voices in his head". Despite admitting killing Chloe Hoson, 5, in a western Sydney caravan park, the Supreme Court yesterday found him not guilty by reason of mental illness. Yesterday's finding reopened the debate about the mental damage caused by long-term cannabis use. The court heard Kosowicz strangled, sexually assaulted then dumped Chloe's body in a creek in November 2003 after she knock…

AN international research team believes it has discovered how marijuana alleviates the pain and debilitating symptoms of diseases such as multiple sclerosis. The researchers claim the finding, reported today in the journal Neuron, promises new therapies to reduce pain and damage to brain cells. MS is a chronic and progressive disease in which the protective sheaths surrounding nerves in the brain and spinal cord are damaged, leading to problems with movement and speech. The German and US researchers found marijuana acts as a "gatekeeper", suppressing the biochemical reactions that cause pain and nerve damage. The new findings fit neatly with a large British study …

A JUDGE yesterday ordered a drug grower to write a 3000-word essay on the links between cannabis and schizophrenia as part of his sentence. In the Supreme Court in Brisbane, Justice George Fryberg said smoking cannabis increased chances of mental illness and, in particular, schizophrenia. He said unlike moderate use of alcohol, use of cannabis could have long-term effects on users. Justice Fryberg was sentencing David Allan Wotton, 43, who pleaded guilty to producing cannabis sativa between September 1, 2004 and April 4 last year. Wotton and his wife Deborah Louise Wotton, 41, also pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis sativa on April 4 last year. Prosecutor Ron S…

12/31/2005 Court Rules It Is Legal To Smoke Pot Seeds State Law Says Nothing Of Possessing Seeds Portland, Ore. -- The Oregon Court of Appeals has ruled that smoking marijuana seeds is legal under state law. The case stems from the 2002 arrest of 27-year-old Pendleton resident Cameron Beers. He was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. In his defense, Beers' lawyers argued that he should never have been convicted because he only had marijuana seeds on him. State law only prohibits possession of leaves, stems and flowers. The Court of Appeals considered whether legislators might have omitted seeds ina…

Cannabis smoke is not as carcinogenic as tobacco smoke. In a review article published today in Harm Reduction Journal, Dr. Melamede from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, USA, writes that although cannabis smoke and tobacco smoke are chemically very similar, evidence suggests that their effects are very different and that cannabis smoke is less carcinogenic than tobacco smoke. The pharmacological effects of tobacco and cannabis smoke differ in many ways, mainly because tobacco smoke contains nicotine while cannabis smoke contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The cancer-promoting effects of smoke are increased by nicotine, while they are reduced by THC. Toba…

AN air and land search by police yesterday found almost $200,000 worth of cannabis growing near Helensburgh. Wollongong police Chief Inspector Mick Tranby said the 96 mature plants were found growing in two well-planned, fenced crops. "Polair, rescue officers and detectives located an area where 55 mature cannabis plants were growing," he said. "The area had been well maintained with chemical agents used to grow the plants which were between 1m and 1.6m in height. "Police estimate those plants have a potential street value of $110,000." Police acted on information from the…

Driving under the influence of cannabis almost doubles the risk of a fatal road crash, finds a study published online by the British Medical Journal. However its share in fatal crashes is significantly lower than those involving alcohol. The study took place in France and involved 10,748 drivers who were involved in fatal crashes from October 2001 to September 2003. All drivers underwent compulsory tests for drugs and alcohol. A total of 681 drivers tested positive for cannabis (7%) and 2096 for alcohol (21.4%), including 285 for both (2.9%). Men were more often involved in crashes than women, and were also more often positive for both cannabis and alcohol, as were th…

Terminal cancer patient fined $2,000 for marijuana By Tom Finnegan LIHUE » A cancer patient with a medical marijuana license from California said he was relieved that he avoided jail time after being sentenced last week for promotion of marijuana. Keith Bierlich of Kilauea was instead fined $2,000, despite using the marijuana for medical purposes. Bierlich has asbestos cancer in his stomach and esophagus, according to his lawyer. Bierlich was arrested last year with 1.2 pounds of marijuana that was shipped to him from the mainland. That is well above the legal amount for someone with a medical marijuana license to legally possess. Instead, he was charged with fi…

What do you guys/gals think of his message. It seems too me that he could have made a comfortable life for himself through the seed industry if he had kept a lower profile i.e he didn't run for all those political posts. I understand that his aim was to legalise the mj industry through his posts but as we know the mainstream public wouldn't like the idea of some 'pot head' in any office or position. I see it as once his profile and influence got larger the LEO's had no option but to shut him down. Sure LEO's have better things to do than to raid a seed bank (rapes, assaults, theft etc) but the U.S government probably realised his 'influence' in the mj industry was a f…
