The amount found in a guest room was "minuscule," he said, and insisted there was no suggestion that he or any of his family were involved. Police found less than one gram of the drug - with a street value of 85p - during a routine security sweep of his house last week. Dr Reid was on ministerial business abroad when police specialists with sniffer dogs swept his house in the…

A meeting of Australia's top policy-making body on drugs today will discuss the creation of three national strategies to tackle alcohol abuse, and substance abuse, including cannabis and petrol sniffing. The Ministerial Council on Drug Strategy is holding its annual conference in Perth. The council comprises the federal, state and territory health ministers, and justice and police ministers. The ABC has been told the conference is likely to endorse a national strategy on cannabis use, covering prevention, treatment, and law enforcement. However it is understood the national plan does not seek to over-ride state laws on cannabis. The state and federal ministers w…

A South Australian woman who smoked cannabis before a crash which killed her teenage friend has been fined and banned from driving for six months. Kay Ellen Colman, 22, had smoked four "cones" of cannabis before she rolled her car near Wilmington in the state's mid-north in November 2003. Her 14-year old passenger was killed. Ms Colman was this week found not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, but guilty of the lesser charge of driving without due care. District Court judge Michael Boylan sentenced Colman on the basis that her driving was not impaired by the cannabis. He added that smoking it before taking the wheel was an act of "gross selfishness." …

A survey of the Northern Territory's drug users shows most have driven while drunk or under the influence of illicit drugs. The survey by the Drug and Alcohol Research council pays people $30 to talk about their drug use, as well as a substance's availability, quality and price. The 2005 results show ecstasy is becoming more popular and is considered easy to get. The results also show users are increasingly combining the party drug with large quantities of alcohol. The majority of those surveyed said in the past six months they had driven while over the alcohol limit and within an hour of taking illicit drugs, usually cannabis or ecstasy. The survey has also fou…

For a while there it seemed as though the latest anti-cannabis campaign driven by John Howard and Morris Iemma was dying down but now it's back and meaner than ever. And, I used to think that channel Ten was a little less anti-cannabis than Nine and Seven but that illusion has been shattered. They joined the anti-cannabis crusade in a big way last night by portraying cannabis as a drug which will ravage users and make them deranged out-of-control murderers. On the 5th of May, 2006, Ten's late news had two negative stories on cannabis. Here is the summary: The broadcast starts at approx 11.55pm and the third headline is: "...and how cannabis is driving Australia '…

Cannabis Painted on High Street House Must Go LITCHFIELD, Conn. -- A man who spray-painted large cannabis leaves on his house has agreed to remove the bright green paintings as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. Christopher Seekins, of Winsted, was arrested in October when police discovered about 100 marijuana plants in his house. He said they were hemp and part of a research project. After his arrest, Seekins painted images of the green leaf on his Victorian-style house, each accompanied by the word "hemp." Town officials say they received several complaints because Seekins' home _ on High Street _ is visible from Winsted's main thoroughfare. Seekins has …

A MAN who bludgeoned his own mother to death because he could not bear the thought of becoming her full-time carer led a secret life of shame and violence as a cross-dressing armed robber. Bizarre details of father-of-three Phillip Parkes' life were revealed yesterday when he was jailed for at least 13 years for the murder of ailing Grace Parkes, 83. Parkes, 49, pleaded guilty in November to the crime, committed in January last year, but faced the Supreme Court for sentencing submissions yesterday. The hearing was told he had previously been convicted of armed robberies, carried out while dressed in women's clothes with an unloaded firearm. This, a psychiatrist to…

THREE Melbourne men have been jailed over the fatal shooting of a man as they tried to steal his cannabis crop. Robert D'Amico, 28, was shot at his home at Tullamarine, north of Melbourne, on September 2, 2003. The Victorian Supreme Court was today told Craig Galas, 33, formerly of Keilor Park, Steven Mikhael, 24, and Ismail Muhaidat, 25, both formerly of Broadmeadows, planned to steal a cannabis crop and cash from Mr D'Amico's home. Galas accidentally discharged a handgun while he was tying Mr D'Amico's arms behind his back in the loungeroom of the home, the court was told. The group fled empty handed as Mr D'Amico lay dying from a bullet wound. Supreme Court J…

Marijuana is medically useful, whether politicians like it or not IF CANNABIS were unknown, and bioprospectors were suddenly to find it in some remote mountain crevice, its discovery would no doubt be hailed as a medical breakthrough. Scientists would praise its potential for treating everything from pain to cancer, and marvel at its rich pharmacopoeia—many of whose chemicals mimic vital molecules in the human body. In reality, cannabis has been with humanity for thousands of years and is considered by many governments (notably America's) to be a dangerous drug without utility. Any suggestion that the plant might be medically useful is politically controversial, whate…

It was just another quickfire raffle at work – but the prize wasn't the usual meatpack or frozen chook. Instead, the winner would take home an ounce of sticky marijuana heads. And ticket seller Timothy Andrew Murphy's number was up when someone called the police. In the New Plymouth District Court yesterday, an embarrassed but smiling Murphy (25), of New Plymouth, admitted he was busted selling raffle tickets at his work on April 7. Judge Louis Bidois asked Murphy if he had lost his job as a result. Murphy confirmed he had, but said in his defence: "It's been done before." Judge Bidois said the scheme was doomed to fail, because when Murphy asked people to buy…
