WA students as young as 12 are peddling drugs to classmates. The problem has become so common that principals are asking police to use sniffer dogs to check children for cannabis and amphetamines. The Sunday Times also can reveal that senior WA police are meeting monthly with teachers and principals in Perth and country towns to try to combat the drug scourge. Supt David Parkinson said parents and politicians would be naive to think drugs were not in public, private and Catholic schools throughout WA. He said police had made the disturbing discovery that some parents were supplying drugs to their children and ordering them to sell the illicit substances to classma…

ROADSIDE drug-drive testing should be introduced in the Territory, it was claimed yesterday. The call was made after a survey revealed one in five Territory drivers had admitted to driving under the influence of popular drugs like ecstasy and cannabis. Many of those surveyed also said they had driven a car within an hour of taking drugs. The survey was carried out by car and home insurer AAMI. Victoria is the only state or territory in the country that conducts the roadside tests. Independent MLA Gerry Wood said the Territory Government should investigate how the testing operated in Victoria and introduce it in the NT. "The Territory should definitely have it," …

The minister in charge of the government's drugs policy has admitted that he has smoked cannabis. Vernon Coaker, a former government whip who was appointed Home Office under-secretary of state in the reshuffle earlier this month, said he tried the drug at university. "When I was a student, I took one or two puffs of marijuana but that was it. I think it was once or twice," he told the Coventry Evening Telegraph. The MP for Gedling in Nottinghamshire insisted he had never taken hard drugs, and did not enjoy the cannabis experience, thinking afterwards: "I'm not doing that." Mr Coaker is not the first politician to come clean – in 2000, five members of the shadow ca…

Cannabis 'Best for Pain Relief' After Operations May 17, 06:51 PM By MARK PRIGG CANNABIS is a far more effective painkiller than existing drugs following surgery, a study by London scientists has found. Researchers at Imperial College London and the Medical Research Council said a cannabis plant extract can provide highly effective pain relief for patients after major surgery such as knee replacements. Dr Anita Holdcroft of Imperial College London, who led the study published today in the journal Anesthesiology, said: "Pain after surgery continues to be a problem because many of the commonly used drugs are either ineffective or have too many side effects. "These…

Police on horseback patrolled the main streets and officers dressed in paramilitary gear and armed with guns inspected venues including the Nimbin museum, which vibrantly promotes marijuana use with its colourful Kombis inside. Some residents were furious when police threaten…
