04.07.2006 By WILL JACKSON DRUG users, dole cheats and visa dodgers were the target of a fourday police, Centrelink and Department of Immigration crackdown in Lismore and Nimbin. Operation Grasstree, which ended on Sunday, was part of an ongoing ‘all of government’ approach to policing in the Richmond Police Local Area Command. Police were armed with drug detection warrants and labrador sniffer dog teams during the operation, which had two stages. Phase one had plainclothes officers patrolling local streets within the command, focusing mainly on Lismore. The second phase saw uniformed officers manning roadblocks on main access roads into Nimbin. Department of…

A SYDNEY man has been charged over the largest seizure of cannabis in NSW, valued at more than $38 million. He is the 16th person arrested over the April 2004 seizure of 3.2 tonnes of cannabis in a raid on a Jacks Creek property, 17km from Narrabri, in the state's west. During the dawn raid, police allege they located drying cannabis in two sheds and suspended within a crop site. Police arrested 15 people at the time. The latest arrest, of a 39-year-old Brighton-le-Sands man, was made outside his southern Sydney home at 11am (AEST) yesterday. The British Government's decision to downgrade cannabis to a Class C drug has been criticised by the head of the United Nations anti-drugs department. Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said countries got the "drug problem they deserved" if they maintained inadequate policies. In an unusual statement, he suggested cannabis was as harmful as cocaine and heroin - a stance which differs wildly from the British attitude of treating cannabis far less seriously than Class A substances. Mr Costa suggested that cannabis was now "considerably more potent" than a few decades ago and that it was a "mistake" to dismiss it as a soft, …

Police to get password powers Where ????? Simon Hayes JUNE 06, 2006 Artical QUEENSLAND [bloodyQld'ers] Police are to be given power to force suspects to hand over passwords and encryption codes. Civil libertarians warn the laws could allow corrupt police to fake evidence, because they will have access to suspects' digital signatures. The legislation, to come into force in July, covers mobile phones, PCs, handhelds and other electronic devices. Non-compliance carries up to 12 months' jail. The amendments to the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act will make Queensland the only state with legislation preventing suspects from claiming the right to…

ONE of Australia's largest drug syndicates, suspected of producing tonnes of high-grade marijuana every year, has been smashed, with arrests and raids across north Queensland last night. A three-year joint police and Australian Crime Commission taskforce - codenamed Charlie-Thatch - has traced the syndicate to Europe and across Australia. At least 10 properties are suspected to have been used as rotating sites for the sophisticated plantations, growing highly potent hybrid strands of "skunk"…
