THE Australian Greens have dropped a controversial policy to study options to supply drug users with ecstasy and marijuana. Party leader Bob Brown said yesterday the party had backed away from the proposal after talking to drug experts. The plan to investigate the regulated supply of illicit drugs was ridiculed by critics in the lead-up to the 2004 federal election. It called for "the controlled availability of cannabis at appropriate venues" and "investigations of options for the regulated supply of social drugs such as ecstasy in controlled environments". Under the Greens' revised drugs policy, decisions about harm minimisation would rest with a proposed new Aus…

By PHILLIP COOREY EXCLUSIVE 20jan06 SOUTH Australia's major political parties have been urged to make the personal use of marijuana a criminal offence as part of their state election agendas. SA federal Liberal MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Christopher Pyne, said it was time to recriminalise personal cannabis use in SA because of links to mental health problems. On-the-spot fines for possessing small amounts of cannabis for personal use have applied in SA since 1988. "It's an illicit drug. The message of decriminalisation is this isn't really a problem," Mr Pyne told The Advertiser yesterday. With the advent of hydroponics, marijuana today was much …

Some cannabis with your tea? von Jenny Wiggins Put that in your pipe and smoke it: A health beverage containing the plant is the latest in a string of new "functional drinks" to find a receptive market. Rituals associated with drinking tea are typically rituals of relaxation. In Britain, workers will take a break for a "mornin' cuppa". In India they will stop by the roadside to pick up a cup of chai. So when a group of entrepreneurs bought the rights to sell a drink made with tea and cannabis in the UK, it could have been the perfect opportunity for marketing a product guaranteed to make consumers zone out. Instead, C-Ice is concentrating on what it claims are its hea…

Is it too early in the morning for me, or did I know nothing about this 'tightening of legislation' in NSW?

Source: ABC News The New South Wales Government is being accused of moving too slowly in allowing some people to legally use cannabis for therapeutic relief. Patients with chronic pain from cancer, HIV/AIDS and other illnesses came to NSW Parliament, calling on the Government to legalise cannabis for the use of pain relief. Premier Bob Carr has supported the idea of a trial of cannabis for medical purposes. One of the patients, Ron, says politicians are happy to talk in favour of the plan but keep failing to implement it. He says patients with severe pain who use cannabis do not want to feel like criminals. "When is somebody going to do something?" he asked. "…

04.07.2006 By WILL JACKSON DRUG users, dole cheats and visa dodgers were the target of a fourday police, Centrelink and Department of Immigration crackdown in Lismore and Nimbin. Operation Grasstree, which ended on Sunday, was part of an ongoing ‘all of government’ approach to policing in the Richmond Police Local Area Command. Police were armed with drug detection warrants and labrador sniffer dog teams during the operation, which had two stages. Phase one had plainclothes officers patrolling local streets within the command, focusing mainly on Lismore. The second phase saw uniformed officers manning roadblocks on main access roads into Nimbin. Department of…

A SYDNEY man has been charged over the largest seizure of cannabis in NSW, valued at more than $38 million. He is the 16th person arrested over the April 2004 seizure of 3.2 tonnes of cannabis in a raid on a Jacks Creek property, 17km from Narrabri, in the state's west. During the dawn raid, police allege they located drying cannabis in two sheds and suspended within a crop site. Police arrested 15 people at the time. The latest arrest, of a 39-year-old Brighton-le-Sands man, was made outside his southern Sydney home at 11am (AEST) yesterday. The British Government's decision to downgrade cannabis to a Class C drug has been criticised by the head of the United Nations anti-drugs department. Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said countries got the "drug problem they deserved" if they maintained inadequate policies. In an unusual statement, he suggested cannabis was as harmful as cocaine and heroin - a stance which differs wildly from the British attitude of treating cannabis far less seriously than Class A substances. Mr Costa suggested that cannabis was now "considerably more potent" than a few decades ago and that it was a "mistake" to dismiss it as a soft, …

Police to get password powers Where ????? Simon Hayes JUNE 06, 2006 Artical QUEENSLAND [bloodyQld'ers] Police are to be given power to force suspects to hand over passwords and encryption codes. Civil libertarians warn the laws could allow corrupt police to fake evidence, because they will have access to suspects' digital signatures. The legislation, to come into force in July, covers mobile phones, PCs, handhelds and other electronic devices. Non-compliance carries up to 12 months' jail. The amendments to the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act will make Queensland the only state with legislation preventing suspects from claiming the right to…

Parliament Debates Medicinal Cannabis View larger imageFile photo shows the rolling of a marijuana joint© Getty Images 15/06/2006NewstalkZBParliament is to debate whether medicinal cannabis should be introduced as a treatment option for people with serious illnesses. The concept forms the basis of Green MP Metiria Turei's private member's bill which has been pulled from the ballot. Ms Turei says the bill will allow registered medical practitioners to prescribe cannabis for specific serious conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, glaucoma and those suffering conditions associated with chemotherapy. She says at present, medicinal cannabis is only availa…
