Source: http://edition.cnn.com/2012/08/09/world/americas/uruguay-marijuana-proposal/index.html (CNN) -- With the intent of undermining the market for illegal drugs, Uruguay's government presented a bill to lawmakers that would legalize marijuana under a government monopoly. The government of President Jose Mujica has argued that the war on drugs has failed, and that separating the market for marijuana from the market for harder drugs will have social and health benefits. The bill was presented to congress on Wednesday, and includes no details of how legalization would be cultivated, regulated or sold. But it makes it clear that the government would be the sole manager…

From: The Australian December 08, 2011 Oldie but interesting. CANNABIS snacks were given the go-ahead by the nation's food regulator yesterday. Food Standards Australia overrode objections from police and health officials that the "marijuana munchies" could interfere with drug tests. It said yesterday it planned to amend the Food Standards Code to permit the used of processed hemp seeds - a rich source of omega fatty acids - to be used as an ingredient in foods ranging from ice cream to cheeses, salad dressings and muesli bars. Likening hemp to poppy seeds, Food Standards chief executive Steve McCutcheon said it was safe to eat, and already used in a range of foo…

A MAN who grew one of Australia's largest cannabis crops so he could fund a nationwide anti-abortion protest has told a court he has no regrets. Michael Bennett Gardner Snr, 58, told the Supreme Court in Brisbane today that he wished he had grown at least another 15 acres of the drug before he was caught in mid-2008. He then took the unusual step of urging the judge to jail him for the maximum of 20 years for the charge of trafficking, to which he pleaded guilty, saying his crime was "the top level of offending". However, Justice Roslyn Atkinson, who described the offending as "evil", agreed with the prosecution that Gardner should be sentenced to 13 years' jail. …

When he got out four years ago, Platshorn -- a weed warrior through and through -- didn't take the easy way out and opt for a quiet retirement. Instead, he took up the cause of medical marijuana, launching The Silver Tour to bring the g…

Tourists puffed on spliffs in the streets of southern Dutch cities and defiant coffee-shops sold joints to visitors in protest against a ban on selling cannabis to foreigners which took effect overnight. In Maastricht, a short drive from both the German and the Belgian borders, protesters waved banners decorated with marijuana leaves and slogans such as "Dealers Wanted" and "Stop discrimination for Belgium". In the main square, a few hundred demonstrators staged a sit-in and about 50 op…

May 22, 2012 MORE than half of Australians support reduced legal penalties for use of drugs such as cannabis and ecstasy, an analysis of a federal government survey shows. The findings contrast with the Herald/Nielsen poll released yesterday, which showed that two-thirds of people opposed decriminalisation. But that is explained by the different way the poll questions were structured, said Alison Ritter, who heads a drug policy modelling program at the national drug and alcohol research centre at the University of NSW. She said it reflected the different responses likely when people were asked about specific approaches rather than the broader decriminalisation que…

Cannabis capsules failed to slow the progression of multiple sclerosis in a large British study, dealing a blow to hopes that it could provide long-term benefits. Despite promising signs in earlier, shorter studies, researchers found patients who took capsules containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a key active ingredient in cannabis, fared no better than those given a placebo. The finding is a disappointment for researchers who thought cannabis might provide a viable therapy in the disease's secondary progressive stage, when patients have few treatment options. Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients were assessed in the trial known as CUPID (cannabinoid use in progressive infl…
