Officers reportedly stumbled across the factory after smelling the pungent crop near an entrance, not far from the Italian central bank. The tunnel, just over half a mile (1km) long, was also being used to cultivate mushrooms. But behind a makeshift wall, police discovered rows of marijuana plants. Mark Metherell, Lisa Davies May 21, 2012 AUSTRALIANS remain firmly against relaxing illicit drug laws despite declarations by a group of eminent Australians and a global commission that the war on drugs has failed. A Herald/Nielsen poll has found two-thirds of Australians oppose decriminalisation. The finding shows little change in attitudes from a similar poll taken 13 years ago. The latest poll finds 27 per cent of voters support decriminalisation, although that figure rises to 50 per cent of Greens and 34 per cent of Labor voters. Support among Liberal and National party voters is much lower, at 18 per cent. Attitudes on the issue appear to be entrenched, wit…

The State Opposition and the Greens have lashed out at the Government's new drug awareness campaign targeting teenage cannabis users. Yesterday, the Government launched the, 'Swap for Pot' message to target 15 to 19 year old cannabis users as a part of the Drug Aware Campaign. The Mental Health Minister Helen Morton encouraged users to "smash their bong". However, the manager of Opposition Business Michelle Roberts doubts the new campaign will decrease the use of drugs. "This campaign is bordering on farcical and trivial. It is too little too late. I don't think it will be effective with young people, I expect most people will make a joke of it," she said. "Probably j…

Mum learns rental was home to drug lab Jessica Elder | 12:01am May 7, 2012 AN UPPER Coomera mother is battling to break a rental lease after discovering the house was once home to a drug den. Alison Palmer's nightmare began in December, a month after the family moved into a rented Upper Coomera home. Her seven-year-old son Isaach began breaking out in rashes, complaining of persistent headaches, leg aches and an eye problem which resulted in broken blood vessels and bulging. Doctors told the family it appeared Isaach had been exposed to chemicals and he was having negative reactions. Ms Palmer spent months trying to work out where the chemical exposure was co…

Source: http://edition.cnn.com/2012/08/09/world/americas/uruguay-marijuana-proposal/index.html (CNN) -- With the intent of undermining the market for illegal drugs, Uruguay's government presented a bill to lawmakers that would legalize marijuana under a government monopoly. The government of President Jose Mujica has argued that the war on drugs has failed, and that separating the market for marijuana from the market for harder drugs will have social and health benefits. The bill was presented to congress on Wednesday, and includes no details of how legalization would be cultivated, regulated or sold. But it makes it clear that the government would be the sole manager…

From: The Australian December 08, 2011 Oldie but interesting. CANNABIS snacks were given the go-ahead by the nation's food regulator yesterday. Food Standards Australia overrode objections from police and health officials that the "marijuana munchies" could interfere with drug tests. It said yesterday it planned to amend the Food Standards Code to permit the used of processed hemp seeds - a rich source of omega fatty acids - to be used as an ingredient in foods ranging from ice cream to cheeses, salad dressings and muesli bars. Likening hemp to poppy seeds, Food Standards chief executive Steve McCutcheon said it was safe to eat, and already used in a range of foo…
