MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WASTED
Currently around 30,000 tests are conducted each year in NSW
Police plan toincrease this to 97,000 in 2017
$6 million spent on roadside salivadrug testing kits, plus thousandsof hours of police and court timeeach year
PRESENCE - NOT IMPAIRMENT
Police Standard Operating Procedures are clear, the testing isNOT for impairment, only for the presence of drugs
Recent cases have had people testing positive a full 9 days after consuming drugs
ONLY SOME DRUGS ARE INCLUDED
In theory police test for:
• 25 nanograms per milligram for THC
• 50 nanograms per milligram for amphetamines and MDMA
BUT recent cases have included prosecutions following trace amounts.
These levelshave no relation to impairment
They do not test for heroin, cocaine, LSD, prescription painkillers orbenzodiazepines (Valium) at all
UK research shows cocaine and benzodiazepines in particular present in large number of crashes
Testingsystems currently used can test for all of these
