Here is a bong in need of a clean, and here is a very easy way to clean it using rice and methylated spirit.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:42 PM
Out with the cone, I don’t normally let my bong get this bad.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:44 PM
A good rinse under the cold tap to get all the loose stuff out of the way.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:46 PM
The shot isn’t really blurry, the Pyrex is very clouded and there is a bit of a build up in places.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:47 PM
In with some uncooked rice.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:49 PM
Pour in some methylated spirit, cover the holes and shake the bong well in random directions for about 30 seconds or until clean.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:51 PM
All the dirt is in the methylated spirit now instead of adhering to the inside of the bong.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:52 PM
There will be a bit of loose crap left on the sides of the bong but if you rinse immediately it will not be a problem, I wipe over the outside of the bong using paper moistened with methylated spirit to remove any streaks. I tip the waste rice and methylated spirit out into the back yard to avoid clogging drains.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:54 PM
Of course I used Australian rice and methylated spirit, but then what else would you use on an Australian made Agung bong? I used steel wool to clean the cone piece.
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:56 PM
Add the water, clean isn’t it?
Tom
Dec 17 2004, 04:58 PM
Now to dirty it again, some White Widow will do for a start.

Cleaned both my bongs the other day with the same method.. sparkling as always.

One tip I can provide that you may not know is mediswabs - those pre-injection (isopropyl?) alcohol prep things. They chew through resin and condensed smoke like nothing else, and they return a conepiece to showroom condition & shine with virtually no real effort.. it just dissolves the crap on the conepiece, and because it's so volatile there's no need to dry the conepiece after.. just count to five and it's safe

The other thing they're super handy for is cleaning the mouthpiece mid-sesh when there's resin starting to accumulate.
They're only about $5 for a few hundred of them, and no cleaning kit is complete without them

This is a really nice tip :thumbsup been doing it every once in a while (okay once in every ~long~ while hahaha :

: )
But nice all the same. Don't forget to let the bong evaporate dry (after giving it a good wipe) so that all the rest of the alcohol goes away too.

May 16 2005, 04:07 PM
many uses for rice, I've recently started adding a teaspoon of uncooked rice to my jars of cured mull, It goes to the idea of using a few grains off rice in your salt shaker to absorbe any moisture that will make the salt damp and clumpy, hence the rice should fix any small amount of moisture left in the smoke or jar, then i use a wax candle to drizzle wax around the lip of the jar for an air tight seal,
probably going off topic wrong section etc, but it did start with rice

Nice work TOM, by the looks of it we have exactly the same waterpipe, beside mine having a break in it

go the Agung!
Yours has the little ice holder divets yeah at the base of the neck?
It's a pain cleaning it, will give this method a go, looks like a winner and very easy.
wow just checked the OzS shop, you paid $70 for that piece? I got mine for $30-35 from a little tobaconist, and it's a real deal, nice thick sturdy glass (again except for the ice holders hehe)

The best way to clean any glass smoking device is to put into it a mixture of rock salt and 99% isopropyl rubbing alcohol. The rock salt acts as an abrasive, the alcohol is a solvent. It works great and will make the glass sparkling clean, no residue and like brand new. Put the mixture in and shake the piece as hard as you can till its clean, simple as that.

If you're a bit queasy about using something as strong as metho to clean your bong, there is a non-toxic product called 'Bong Bath' made by a Victorian company called Waterfall. Works brilliantly, but I'd back up that suggestion of using rice as an agitator. I'm not sure about the availability of Bong Bath, but I got mine free from a bong shop (Off Ya Tree) in Adelaide when I purchased a Waterfall double chamber bong. I think the regular price is $5 for a bottle of 250ml.
As with all cleaning products, though, make sure you thoroughly rinse a couple of times with clean water, especially if you plan to scrape/smoke the resin next time.
Happy cleaning!

If you're a bit queasy about using something as strong as metho to clean your bong
??? Strong as metho? Its active ingredient is ethanol, of which it consists some 95-99%. Water is the next constituent, in terms of volume, the amount dependent upon the level of the anhydrousness of the ethanol. Lastly, in relatively minute quantity, a coal tar derivative called Pyridine, is used as a denaturant. It has a very unpleasant odour and taste. Pyridine is only one of many different denaturants used around the world for metho production, however. The most famous, but uncommonly used today, is methanol, from which the namesake obviates. I've got no idea what's in bongbath, but I doubt very much I'd drink it. I drink ethanol every day.
And Tom, that's a great cleaning method, I must say. The abrasive factor is genius.
If you'd like to surprise yourself a little further, try shellite instead of metho. The result is almost instantaneous. A quick dash of metho afterwards to encourage the miscibility of shellite with water, and your done.

Im not going to change my ways.. Thats what I mean it doesnt suit me.
Nothing beats getting in there with the warm soapy water and a bottle brush!
Nothing!
Hey alch, what sort of soap are you using? I used to use eucalyptus wool wash as it left the bong with a nice fresh smell rather than that "hint of ancient cones" scent, I also used a baby bottle brush that I had extended the handle on.

But of course as was said ... it is basically the alchohol we (I) drink.

acetone is a good one if it doesn't have plastic parts
almost instant total dilution of the resign
conepieces even a quick shake in acetone will come out shining
just a quick rinse with water and it is sparkling

strangely enough, the rice and metho technique has always worked for me, but with my current bong it doesnt work worth shit

like it clears the majority of shit away, but a thin layer of sticky bong resin remains under the water level thats nearly impossible to get off...i have tried soaking it it metho, shaking with rice and method inside for about 10 mins straight, got in there with the green part of a washing up sponge (the yellow and green kind), etc. with no luck what so ever

almost gave up on it untill i remembered pH down stripped the same sort shit away in my mrs's old bong so i tried that on its own, gave it a swirl and it lifted a heap of shit off and very quickly too

just needed to give it a little bit of a scrub to make sure i lifted it all off + had to rinse it out really well, but it came up cleaner than i expected
anyone have any idea's on what this bong resin shit is and why it wont lift up with normal rice and metho cleaning? its just i have never seen shit in the bong that wouldnt lift with rice and metho before so it has me a little flipped out

Jul 3 2006, 11:44 PM
Use mineral turps, it works better I've found.
Cleans better, less scrubbing, just rinse well with cold water afterwards and your all set to go!
You can even make your cone peice come up shining just like the day you bought it, try it!
Don't get me wrong, metho works too but it takes longer and doesnt always clean up the REAL heavy stains as some people have said.
happy smoking

High All ,
Jus Got a new Bong (glass) myself , and need to clean the old one muchly ...
But I was wondering if anyone knows a more natural/practical way to clean a Bong that is only slightly tarnished.
Also ... What sort of Sponge/scourer device is the best in your opinionz ... Any type that works better than most??

Bottle Brushes seem to be inefficient for me , what do ya reckon ...
Aswell ... Has anyone heard of putting a few drops of milk into your clean Bong so as to stop the gunge from sticking so easily ... Does this work ? ... Or Is it another mythical fable ...
Well ... thats enough Q's for now ... So Budman ... Out. (Cleaning Windows).

If you only use water in your bong then why not just dump a load of Iso in there and shake it around then dump that shiet out and make urself some nice oil...

or for some reason is this a bad reason and my reasoning is not logical reasoning because I've smoked too much?
I want some chocolate. >.<
