As someone mentioned earlier, there's not much point going to great efforts to keep the LEO's out. Especially with the IP's... first of all, they'd prefer to use their ip, but if it was blocked or hindered, they'd just organise to get a [legal] tunnel through another, external IP [maybe an associated entity, or an ISP, anybody really as long as it "assists the case"]. Secondly, most of those IP's would probably have little to nothing to do with this situation... Or if they did, it wouldn't be on the investigation end, and they wouldn't use the inside IP blocks to access the... well actually I'm talking out of my arse for that second point, but the first point remains

It's very very easy to fake your technical online identity.. even with social engineering, it just comes down to which party has the most patience, resources, and power to make it work. No prizes for guessing if it's the cops or the backgarden growers

So, if you can't keep them out... give them nothing to find when they get in. The good thing about IP proxies are that they're so easy to find and use. You can protect your online identity a number of ways that would definitely hinder an investigation into your personal situation... [note this doesn't help the site so much, with the points i'm making

].
Ok, a few tips/ideas to protect your identity:
Technical:
- Download and use a proxy cycling program. You get lists of IP Proxies, test them to get the ones that work and are anonymous, and chuck them in the program and make it cycle through them.
- Sign up with a temp/impartial email that can't be traced back to your name/situation anywhere except this forum.
[You could probably think of more, but I want to move onto personal]:
Personal:
- Use only your first name, approximate age [i.e 24, not DOB 17/2/80, etc] and approx location
- Pay attention when you're making posts, uploading images, or talking to people.. You can give a lot of information about your situation and thus who you could be through that sort of stuff. They would just need to lower down the possible suspects of your online identity to your name, then ask your ISP to give out logs, and then "they" are onto you.
- Watch what you put in your profile, where you host your images, etc. Vague stuff in your profile, and host all your [non forum uploaded] pictures with stuff like
http://imageshack.usI don't know about the LEO situation on these forums, but those are solid tips for any sort of online endeavour. If you need help with the proxy's, or further explaining, i and probably a few others on the board would be happy to help you out. It's not difficult, confusing, or tedious stuff, and it helps a lot [unfounded paranoia or not

Can anybody explain the deal with the LEO problems on this forum? Who they're going after, what they're doing, or if they're just sort of a Big Brother watcher type entity, checking up on us "just in case".
