wacko.gif I've been knocked of the Oz stoners and the net about 10 times tonight and i have to reconnect again, sometimes it does this when people are trying to call through on the phone, but that's not the case this time.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause this all of a sudden?

How often? Do you have many devices attached to the phoneline - i.e. lots of phones, answering machine, modem etc. all on the one line?

If you're getting disconnected when people call you probably have call waiting enabled, I think you dial *43# to disable it but check your White Pages or Telstra website for help. If you've got lots of other devices on the line, they may be drawing too much current or interfering, try putting your modem as the first device then plug your phone/answering machine etc. into the modem as the modem will cut the connection to all other devices whereas if the modem is the last thing on the line (behind the other devices if you will), then you'll get interference from all of them before your data reaches the modem.

Also try talking to your ISP, this is the type of thing they can help you with.

Yes, disable call waiting first. Also older models of the telstra touchphones draw power from the phone line every 15mins and you will get disconnected - unplug them!

Thanks sooo much AA & Cheif,

I've had a bit of a play with the connections and it seems to be going ok now, must have been something loose. I'll try disconnecting call waiting later too, thanks for the number AA smile.gif .There are some people who've learned they can knock me of the net and thus get me when THEY want me dry.gif .How RUDE

Also, if you only have one phone line and a mobile phone, you can set your phone to "call foward immediate" so that if anyone calls you while your online, the call will be diverted straight to your mobile phone and you wont be knocked off line and wont miss the call.

dial ...... star 21 then your mobile number then hash.

Instructions are also at the front of the telstra white pages phone book.

Hope this helps smile.gif

What Operating System are you using, Windows95/98? There was an old IP stack exploit where you could send an ATH0 (tells modem to hang up) over IP and most modems wouldn't properly escape the characters and send it raw so you'd hang up. People used to do a 'ping of death' like this to each other, it was hilarious at the time (~97-98).

Definitly call your ISP, this is the kind of call they'll be getting every day and they can run you through every variable much quicker than we can by posting back and forth. Definitly try disconnecting older Testra touchphones, you can order a replacement phone from Telstra if this is the problem, or try all other devices on the line and see if you're ok, then isolate them one by one and see which it is..

If it's an old version of Windows there may just be a stack overflow or something and someone's playing with you, trying updating with all of the service packs or whatever you can find at microsoft.com for your version. Win98 just got end of lined, so pretty soon you'll have to upgrade to Win2k/XP if you want to get regular security updates to keep on top of this kind of thing.

The +++++ATH0 or whatever string is a feature in dialup modems - it has nothing to do with IP - some modems allow you to disable the effect of this line but most dont.

Its probably someone calling you but it could be line noise also - you can get hellstra to do a line-noise test on your line and if theres any problems you can ask them to fix it or change the modem settings to allow for some data corruption [your ISP can tell you what settings to use or you can ask me to have a guess at them but get the line-noise test before doing any of this].

If you happen to be auto-replying through a chat program and sending the chatters text back to them then a cable modem user who sends the AT command above can disconnect the modem - when your modem sees this string passing through it from your computer it will hangup. smile.gif

Who has your number or messenger nickname and doesnt like you? wink.gif

You misunderstand me smile.gif If you know what characters your modem uses to escape strings, you can craft an IP payload containing the right combination of characters to get around the escaping and the raw ATH0 is interpreted by the modem as a command instead of sent up the stack. Then *click* you're offline ohmy.gif

Years ago the solution was the change the default escape character your modem used, I think they all used the same default. But it's been years since I've used a modem or heard of this being used - it's just another possibility.

Yeah, part of your ISP charges contribute to maintaining a help line, they are the best ones to help you out, unless you are with bigpond that is. wacko.gif :laugh.gif:
