I keep getting a strange effect on my pc, where it changes my internet settings. It makes it so when I start up the pc, and open internet explorer, it tells me I haven't got a connection! Then I open internet tools, connections, and my connection box is ticked as "never dial a connection" instead of the normal "always dial a connection"... why does this keep switching back to the never dial one every now and again....?

It's an easy fix of course, but it's really got me stumped as to what might be doing it... I recently installed ICQ, but I'm not sure if this is the culprit... if anyone can advise me on why my computer doesn't want me to connect out to the internet, please post here... biggrin.gif Thanks. cool.gif

stoned thought but have you tried uninstalling ICQ?

I too use ICQ and had this problem myself once, but I was getting work done on the pc and I formatted and sectored the hard drive anyways, So i never fixed it.

Its probably your users policy being broken [I dont use Windows often but Ive heard this happens - I think poledit.exe is used to fix things if its Win95/98 - no idea about NT/XP and I dont know how you fix it]. I usually install tweakui and make it auto-login a user so that settings are usually saved properly when I install a system for someone.

One day soon [!] Windows will be subverted by a real operating system. smile.gif

Hey luke I take it youve checked for viruses/script exploits/trojans etc? And downloaded all latest security updates for your operating system?

Its now called Fedora Linux and its a good start but its not the most stable system - Debian hardly ever crashes [the whole system].

Wilderbud your thinking of logging the user onto the system.. not the internet

and yeah its prolly icq.. it has an option in it that asks if you want it to connect when it starts (or it used to) but unchecking this option makes it FORCE windows not to dial.. (or it used to) cus they are too lazy to dectect a connection...

you could allways try and icq compatible client insted of the icq one.. but often they are prone to other bugs.. or everytime they load your pc asks/trys to connect...

so its kinda catch 22 :S
hope that all made sence!

personaly im a SUSE boy... debain is good and all... but i aint ever had trouble with suse!

Sounds like that's it... I'll have to fiddle around a bit in there and see if I can't fix it...

Thanks everyone, your help is much appreciated. biggrin.gif
