What do think all your microsoft based porducts have inbuilt into them anyway...if you bothered to check the IE dll's and some odd the basic information sent across during a windows update and when you browse the web....ooohh and yeah by the way, all this information relays back also via probes sent off by ISP's such as Tesltra.....where does it go. It goes back the information exchange network which is linked back to the US and big brother.
Solution, for the paranoid ones out there who'd like to take some control of this....please use the following apps to start your ventures:
Sygate, Langaurd, Neotrace and Adaware.

Where can I DL these from??
AdAware is the only program I would use. I dont run Windows on my computer but AdAware rus on the Windows computer thats in the house. 
Another great program for Windows is the Zone Alarm firewall [not sure if it does XP also but its great for securing yourself from trojans which are easy to accidentally install and run].
I choose AVG virus scanner also for the Windows computer - its free and complete like the above programs.

Personaly I don't think you can go wrong with a slackware box running lids , PF , snort and squid . sitting at the front of your network it's like a 14 foot bouncer ready to throw any dickhead out 
Out of the stuff you reccomended i Would replace LANGuard with NMAP it is a FAR better product Lan Guard is not that good at all if you want other alternatives I have quite a few better than LANGuard and I would also recomend the slightly more advanced people try Snort or another IDS
