A Guide To Resizing Your Images Using Different Methods

Method #1: MS Paint
Software Needed:
  • MS Paint

This is probably the quickest method, seeing as everyone already has everything they need to resize your images installed on your PC. First you will need to open MS Paint. This can usually be done from accessing the start menu > accessories and then clicking 'Paint'. If you cant find it this way hold down the windows key on your keyboard and press R (the letter), then type 'mspaint.exe' (without the quotation marks) in the box that pops up and it should start.

Once Paint opens, you will need to click File > Open, and then navigate to your image file using the file-browser that pops up. Once you locate your file, simply double click on it to open it in Paint. Once your image loads, simply click File > Save As, and save your file under the same name, or a different one if you prefer to keep the original file intact. I prefer to use the file extension '.jpg / .jpeg' as this is one of the most widely known and recognised image formats and is accepted at any image hosting service.

This method probably isnt the quickest one available, but as I said before, it is the easiest because you dont need to download any extra programs to do the job. Also, the quality is still quite good when done this way as ]well, even though it reduces the file size drastically.

Method #2: Microsoft Image Resizer Powertoy
Software Needed
  • Microsoft Image Resizer Powertoy, download free from HERE (right click > save link as / save to disk). The file is only 500kB, so it should download quite quickly.

This is my preferred method of resizing, once you install the software it is definitely the quickest in my opinion. First you need to download the software. Once downloaded, you need to install. Do this by double clicking the file 'ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe' (the file you just downloaded). After installation is complete you may / may not be required to restart your PC, if asked to do so, close all applications before clicking "yes". After your PC restarts (if it needs to of course), the software is set up and ready to run!

Now all you need to do to resize an image is browse to the folder that contains your image file, right-click on the file and select 'Resize Pictures'. After you click this, a box will pop up giving you four optins: Small, Medium, Large and Handheld. If you click the 'advanced' tab, you can specify the dimensions you would like the image to be if you dont find one to suit your needs in the above options. I usually find that the 'small' (640x480) size is best, and it usually reduces a 1.5 - 2.0MB image to around 40 - 50kB, still keeping pretty damn good image quality.

If you would like to resize multiple images using this method, all you need to do is hold the ctrl key down while selecting your mutiple images (they do have to be in the same folder sorry), and then right-click on any of the highlighted files and select 'resize pictures'. After selecting the size, they all will be resized and placed in the same folder as the original pictures. It wont overwrite your original pictures unless you check that option under the 'advanced' tab, it will just add which size you chose (small, medium, large, handheld or custom) after the image name.

  • I have tried about 5 or 6 different image resize programs (pay to use, and free) on top of these ones, and these two ways seem to be the easiest / quickest while still keeping as much of the image qualiity as possible. I guess if you already have a different way you may not want to change, but please give these a thought as they really are very easy to use.

Any questions, comments or even suggestions for a new, easy-to-use, FREE program I could add here, please dont hesitate to pm me.

So you just open the image in MS Paint, then 'save as' without doing anything else to make the image smaller?
I go thru alot of trial and error trying to get a 2MB photo down to 100KB.

here is the one that i used http://www.shrinkpictures.com is so easy but you have to set your pics to 50% for smaller pics and 25% for bigger pics also set to general quality. once it is resized you right click and 'save as" to you pictures in your puter and then remove the resize from the site(theres a button to do this. good luck, took me some time to find this one but is sooooo easy i even did it while i was smashed as....

If you don't wanna download a program or anything, you can resize the image just using the windows picture and fax viewer and paint. You just go and open up the image in it (picture should open up in this program automatically, if not just right click>open with>windows picture and fax viewer) click and drag the corner of the window to resize the image to the size you want then press print screen (the key on your keyboard that says Prnt Scr). Go into paint press paste, crop the image down to just your picture then save it.
